The Hugo Awards ^ | August 20, 2016

Posted on 08/21/2016 2:34:41 PM PDT by EveningStar

The 2016 Hugo Awards were presented on the evening of Saturday, August 20, 2016 at a ceremony at MidAmeriCon II, the 74th World Science Fiction Convention. Administration of the 2016 Hugo Awards is exclusively the responsibility of MidAmeriCon II. The Hugo Awards are not administered by the Hugo Awards Web Site.

3,130 valid final ballots were cast by the members of MidAmeriCon II. Per the WSFS Constitution, each category must have at least 25% (1,488 ballots) participation; otherwise “No Award” must be presented in this category. This did not happen in any category. In the list below, we show the number of ballots cast in that category.

This year’s Hugo Awards were awarded last night at MidAmeriCon II in Kansas City, with works such as N.K. Jemisin’s The Fifth Season and Nnedi Okorafor’s Binti walking away with the top prizes. You can read the entire list of winners here, but this year’s awards require a careful look.

Like many oldsters, I ache for the stars of yesteryear. Also, like the seniors of my youth, I'd probably be wrong.

Still, the only winner I'd endorse is the Best Dramatic Presentation, Long Form - The Martian screenplay by Drew Goddard, directed by Ridley Scott (Scott Free Productions; Winberg Genre; TSG Entertainment; 20th Century Fox)

I did root for Baen's Toni Weisskopf for Best Editor - Long Form. Ah well, maybe next year!

Thanks for posting this.

I have not noticed if you do this every year. I probably only see evening posts, but thank you again.

I'd have been tempted to "No Award" the Martian for its lead. Team America nailed Damon properly.

No matter what actually wins, the 2016 Hugos will still be remembered mostly for “Space Raptor Butt Invasion”, and they will wince at it for years to come.

Whenever I answer a poll I say that I am Hispanic and Democrat and I answer questions like I post on this forum.

Who won the contra hugo awards? There’s a group that has been protesting the hugos and was banned because they said PC had taken over.

Basically the “gamer gate” of science fiction/fantasy...

“Social Justice Warriors” value politics over plot development, the demographics of the author and story characters over quality, messaging over quality of the story. It is the political litmus test applied to authors and content that is ruining scifi, killed the blockbuster summer movie, and destroying comedy, too.

Were they all SJW fanfic winners again? Or anti-SJW “puppies” or what? Neither? Both?

Found it. Rabid Puppies 2016 Basically they are the anti SJW Hugo nominees. Slate hates their guts so they must be doing something right.

Warning....The following link is to a blog. It’s not my blog. Today was the first day in probably 4-6 months that I have visited this blog, and I forgot that this blogger was part of the movement that created this counter Hugo group. I’m only including the link for those that are interested.

Butcher got robbed (again). I guess he's too white, male, and heterosexual for them.

“Binti” is nothing more than thinly veiled political commentary, ignorant political commentary at that. It would be better categorized as agitprop than as science fiction.

Over at IO9/gizmodo, they are celebrating the “rabid puppies” loss as a victory, savaging the entire group.

I introduced my pre-adolescent son to my Dad’s collection of 1950s to 1970s scifi like Niven, Pournelle. Asimov’s young adult scifi is WAY better than the clit-lit (climate disaster literature) that is the norm right now.

I thought it stood for something else.
