'Food crisis' hits 10,000 laid-off Indians in Saudi Arabia

Sushma Swaraj said "large numbers" of Indians had lost their jobs in the kingdom, leaving them with not enough money to buy food.

The Indian community in Jeddah, with the government's help, has distributed food to those in need at the weekend.

Growth has slowed in Saudi Arabia as the country suffers the effect of lower oil prices.

Ms Swaraj appealed on Twitter for the three-million-strong Indian community in the country to "help your fellow brothers and sisters".

"I assure you that no Indian worker rendered unemployed in Saudi Arabia will go without food," she wrote.

A government minister is travelling to Saudi Arabia, Ms Swaraj said. He is expected to help with arrange an airlift of laid-off Indians who are unable to afford the air fare home.

The Indian consulate in Jeddah said it had distributed more than 15,000kg (34,000lb) of food on Saturday alone, with the help of Indian nationals in the city.

The embassy in Riyadh was asked to distribute as much food as they could to those in need.

Reports in India on Saturday said 800 Indian workers had lost their jobs at Saudi Oger, a large Saudi-Lebanese construction company.

The Saudi-based Arab News website reported on Sunday that hundreds of Saudi Oger's employees, who said they had not been paid in seven months, had led protests in Jeddah.

The Saudi government has not commented on the situation of the Indian workers.

Maybe they can pinch off another billion mouths to feed and fill them with all the extra dried feces.

The Saudis better be careful. When our government cut Indian food rations, they left to camp and dance along the Little Bighorn river.

Starve the scummy Saudis instead. There should be no oil imported from the Middle East when our domestic oil industry is suffering, pulling down the stock market with it. However, our anti- American president was successful in getting Iran’s oil business on its feet as part of their nuclear weapons boost, a real win-win for our enemies. The Democrats should be ashamed, but Hellery is proudly running for “Obama’s third term.”

Doesn’t the Koran require the Saudis to support these unemployed people in their country?

Saudi brought them in, treated them little better than slaves, haven’t paid them what paltry wages they were due for seven months and now India is having to send food aid?

Or declare them infidels and tax them and cut their heads off.

The US should start issuing emergency visas so that all these starving Indians can come to the US (at least until the November elections). /sarc

I guess they could apply for jobs as sex slaves .... doesn’t pay anything and you get beaten regularly but your Muslim master will feed you scraps (mainly because they don’t have dogs and they have to do something with the scraps).

In a Christian nation, churches and congregants would have quickly organized soup kitchens and the like to feed and clothe the poor.

No Christians in SA, just muzz slimes. Human life has no value there.

I believe they are taking about A Bend In The River Indians. Not the Asians crossing the Baring Strait Indians.

The saudis employ what essentially amounts to slave labor, and then discard them and leave them to starve when no longer needed. Sounds like your typical muslim practice, because muslims are all about taking dhimmi slaves to abuse and discard as required to further the caliphate.

Has someone informed the all-concerned Moocher about this situation? Maybe she could post a hashtag or something.

This is a false melodrama being portrayed by the BBC along the lines of a hegelian dialectic.

There’s not automatically a ‘good guy’ in any situation. Why do people automatically feel compelled to pick a side when these kinds of things happen?

Nobody to root for here. Both of these countries stink.
