Kmart employees believe the company is nearing bankruptcy and is in the process of shutting down all its stores.

The chain has closed one-third of its stores in the last decade, and sales have been cut in half in the same time period.

Store-level employees who spoke to Business Insider said many of the remaining 941 Kmart stores now appear to be in the midst of liquidation.

Stores are being entered into numbered phases — such as Phase 1 and Phase 2 — employees said.

Too bad. Often times the prices at KMart are better than at Walmart. The service at Kmart sure is a heck of a lot better. Maybe that is from employees working to keep their jobs.

don’t care much for the Kmarts around here....don’t go to Walmart either...its Fred Meyer or the Dollar Store...we have Shopko out here and its a much cleaner store than Kmart IMO..

For a long time though, they didn’t keep the shelves stocked, and you couldn’t find someone to help.
The kmarts near us shut down a couple of years ago. The nearest one is so far across town that I don’t even think of them as an option.

The last time I was in Kmart I think there were more employees than customers in the store and the parking lot was empty. Sometimes I go there because it’s more convenient than dealing with the crowds at Wal-Mart.

...are going to be imminently shut down.

Really? "...are going to be imminently shut down"?

And these people are demanding at least 15 US dollars per hour? For what? The danger of the imminency of shuttingdownerism? (Spelling Is Correct!)

It’s sister stores - SEARS, are not far behind. The current CEO has been a disaster (of course he will walk away with billion$$). When they started making most Craftsman hand tools in China I stopped shopping there.

That's good. They deserve it. K-Mart stopped selling guns and ammo over 12 years ago and I've been boycotting them ever since.

It worked.

You boggled at that one too, huh? ;) The real tragedy, though, will be if the editor who (presumably) let that one sneak through is making $15 dollars (or more!) per.

“When they started making most Craftsman hand tools in China I stopped shopping there.”

Yes, Craftsman has ceased to be the quality it was years ago. I understand that the company that made their hand tools now make the Husky brand for Home Depot.

Here’s the list of store closings! 78 are going this year.

I thought they already were shut down.
Sears is similarly hanging on by a thread.
If Sears reduced the cubic foot space of their stores by half, it may be easier to survive.

Very interesting. We had 2 within a 10 mile drive from my house. One closed about 2 years ago. The other is still open. I shop there about once every 10 years. (I shop less than anyone I have ever known. For food, I shop.).
