Erdogan targets more than 50,000 in purge after failed Turkish coup

Turkey vowed to root out allies of the U.S.-based cleric it blames for an abortive coup last week, widening a purge of the army, police and judiciary on Tuesday to universities and schools, the intelligence agency and religious authorities.

Around 50,000 soldiers, police, judges, civil servants and teachers have been suspended or detained since the coup attempt, stirring tensions across the country of 80 million which borders Syria's chaos and is a Western ally against Islamic State.

"This parallel terrorist organisation will no longer be an effective pawn for any country," Prime Minister Binali Yildirim said, referring to what the government has long alleged is a state within a state controlled by followers of Fethullah Gulen.

"We will dig them up by their roots," he told parliament.

A spokesman for President Tayyip Erdogan said the government was preparing a formal request to the United States for the extradition of Gulen, who Turkey says orchestrated the failed military takeover on Friday in which at least 232 people were killed.

U.S. President Barack Obama discussed the status of Gulen in a telephone call with Erdogan on Tuesday, the White House said, urging Ankara to show restraint as it pursues those responsible for the coup attempt.

Sharia or die

As soon as Obama jumped on board for Erdogan, I knew it.

I be the coup was staged - encourage some known dissidents to start, thinking they will have some major backing.

The fact that they could have shot Erdogan down and didn’t tells a lot too.

And now the average Turk, who may not have cared for Erdogan before, will suddenly start believing that Erdogan can truly resurrect the Ottoman Empire, which is the secret desire of EVERY Turk.

The fact that they could have shot Erdogan down and didn’t tells a lot too.

That is the most important single indicator of this coup being a ruse.

The only thing that stood in Erdogan's way of islamizing Turkey were the secular forces in the Army. And now they are gone.

I have a feeling this was more CIA inspired “Arab Spring” insanity. The CIA is now officially on the Incompetence Watch List for making the world safe for clowns, mimes and jugglers.

The country only has 80 million.

Will be hard to match Mao’s or Stalin’s approx 70 million.

But, maybe he should try?????

Hitting critical mass.

Studies have shown that the average number of acquaintances (people you recognize somehow) over a 20 year period is upwards of 2,000 people.

With 50,000 people purged and an overall population of 80 million, that would make 1 in 1,600 Turks being purged.

That means that the average adult Turk is an aquintence of, or would somehow recognize, someone that is being purged.

This will instill fear widely in the society, which is probably the very intent -much like a Stalinist purge.

Oh, it’s right out of Stalin’s playbook. I’m just wondering who’s playing the role of Nikolai Yezhov?

It’s pretty obvious that Gülen is Erdogan’s Trotsky. I’d suggest he be careful of ice axes.

I kinda remember something like this happened no so long ago in History. All officers above LTC were removed and disappeared, because they were influenced by outside their country’s officer training program.

Erdogan is as ruthless as Stalin, and as cunning as Adolf Hitler. Turkey should be expelled from NATO forthwith and without long negotiations. He has encircled the Incirlik air base, cutting off power and effectively shutting down its use as a point of launch against ISIS forces. More importantly, the US Air Force has forward storage of nuclear weapons on site, and some of our most advanced delivery systems for second strike capability. Essentially, Erdogan has declared war on the US, and apparently expects us to just bloodlessly hand over the real estate and the goods stored upon it.

Very bad host. Far more dangerous than Bashir al-Assad.

Who has contol of the weapons??? Good question and one Kerry better weigh before extradition is considered. Both Erdogan and Gulen have billions. Any possibility the two have divided up the creation of a global caliphate? Just a thought.
