The Islamist terror attack in Nice France, carried out by a jihadist in a heavy truck, should be yet another blow to the Democrat gun control movement in the U.S., and an indictment of the Euro-socialist model of government that the left adores.
First and most obviously, the attacker used a commonly available, useful, but potentially dangerous tool to slaughter many more people than his fellow jihadist in Orlando managed with firearms. Are we to ban heavy trucks now? It is probable that some Islamist nutcase in America will try to imitate his French co-religionist. When that occurs will President Obama bewail the availability of heavy truckseasier to rent from U-Haul than buying a book?
There is another aspect of this tragedy that undercuts the gun controllers as well. France is one of the worlds most restrictive nations when it comes to ownership of firearms, yet saw its people helplessly victimized by an armed (the driver also apparently carried a pistol though seemingly without effect) and brutal attacker without effective recourse, despite enhanced security efforts in the country. If such an event happened in some parts of America, particularly in a state that doesnt unreasonably restrict the right to carry, there at least would be a significant possibility that a civilian on the scene could stop or at least mitigate the attack.

Actually, I don’t think a lot of on-the-spot bystanders armed would have made much difference.
That was a very heavy truck with kinetic momentum energy keeping it moving, in my estimation, even if the driver was incapacitated.
Whoever planned this, planned it well for maximum effect.
Here’s a thought for you parents and grandparents who drop the kids off to middle school, etc. Doe it have an entry that can stop the errant multi-ton vehicle at the entrance? If it couldn’t, how far would one get at the highest value time?
Kill them. Kill them all. This insane rabid Muslim insanity has to stop.
No.>p>He will call for the banning of guns and probably take steps to do just that if the carnage is extensive.
I noticed over the weekend in France, the Interior Minister asked the general public to pick up applications for the reserve police. Presently, there are only 12,000 such individuals on such duty in France.
What this does....if you accept...is a way to get a license for carrying a gun. Normally, unless you go for the hunter or target shooter license....that’s about it. But with this reserve cop authority....you’d be able to tote a weapon where ever you went.
Imagine putting 10 million French guys on the street in 30 days....each armed.
Kind of like a “licensed” militia?
FWIW ...watched another video of the Nice France attack .... folks were in front of a stage with a band playing. Time from oh crap detection to hitting folks in front of the stage was less than 3 seconds...... I can draw and fire a round in 1.4 seconds these days when timed, yeah getting old. But thats in competition or training. If I was there with a lifetime of skill sets as military and law enforcement I honestly believe all I could have done to save myself would have been by running perpendicular to the path of that truck...... my opinion only.
Yes. Like I implied.. Good effective tactical planning. Maximum effect. IMO, it wasn’t spur of the moment or anything like that.
To go along with that, a survey cited by wiki suggests northern European citizens, including French and Germans, are more well-armed than most think =>

Indeed. What a ridiculous headline.
The armed citizenry of Dallas didn't stop or mitigate that attack.
It's one thing to read about the occasional citizen stopping a stick up guy in a 7/11. But when faced with someone whose sole purpose is to kill every person he can then the inclination for almost everyone, armed or not, will be to flee or hide.
I ponder Nice and think about some of the other massive open targets in our nation, especially in weapon restrictive states. There, all that stands between thousands of the public and a terrorist are a pair of handguns on officers.
Worse, often times these streets are open to motor traffic up until shortly before the beginning of the event. Strangely, security concerns are almost universally concerned with the staging areas of the events rather than the actual route the event will take place.
The explained concept is that if someone were to attack the staging area, the event would be naturally cancelled and with minimal effort, they could put a stop to the event. Like a car or a truck mowing through a thousand feet of those waiting for the event to begin won’t do the same? Heck, it’s even quite possible that they could even get away to do it again.
This is as practical as a conversation on banning sexy weapons. The problem is the people who are doing it, and those who support their actions by creating the basis for their dogma. The ones who preach that there are virgins waiting for the martyr, that a woman must be covered, that holding slaves is a right, that murdering for the cause is right, to the vast numbers of Muslims who believe that murder of someone who defiles the prophet is acceptable.
That is where the focus truly needs to be. Yes, some more armed Americans can and will save lives. I sincerely doubt they would be a factor in either the planning or execution of an attack until they are actually employed as a citizen militia in sufficient numbers to repel an attack.
The French have had a reserve police organization for decades. It’s mostly used during fests, sports events, political rallies, etc. They usually direct traffic, hand out leaflets, search for missing people, etc. But there’s not much you’d have to do....to legalize this group into having a pistol and carrying it as part of your “duty”.
I wouldn’t call it a militia, but it’s about 98-percent of the same thing. It might take 30 days to craft the language about pistols or arms, and how you’d have to get some training by the local cops to carry a weapon. But I could imagine several million people signed up by December and armed on the streets. When confronted and some mass killing is the agenda....the attacker might get to the first five people...but after that point, he’ll meet his end. In my mind, this is only thing left to reshape the whole threat in France.
I might add.....it works in Israel.
I live in Germany and can attest that getting a weapon’s license is not all that difficult. There is a cop review, some investigation of your background, no prior arrests, and then a training requirement. I would guess to say that out of eighty-one million Germans....at least 70 million would be able to pass through the requirements.
I might add....there is no weapon’s control law in Germany for any gun manufactured prior to 1871....which means for a muzzle-loader...anyone could have one without the paperwork.
Yet the same people (or their effing MSM surrogates) say “why didn’t you armed citizens stop this Nice, France, misunderstood, non-Muslim unfortunate? You know, the one with the 18 odd tonne truck that sped down through town on the most opportune time to butcher people with a truck?
Me? I don’t think about the most ‘fantastical’...I think about “what’d have been my options?” if I had a gun.....
Frankly, my inclination at 67 years old wouldn’t be flee and hide if I had a gun I knew that could drop someone..
The,govt. would be smart to blanket deputize all ccw holder in the country.Include,a provision that all states must recognize permits from any other state.
Yep. An armed citizenry COULD prevent these attacks - but only by taking preventive action.
They’d need to kill or expel all Moslems and destroy their mosques. Kinda ugly.
What do you think the terrorists will do with self driving cars?
Actually, the incident was almost terminated by an unarmed bystander on a motorcycle. He drove up and jumped on the moving truck, and tried to grab the driver. Unfortunately, the driver was able to push him off, and he was run over.
If he had been armed, the story likely would have ended differently.
