Israel wants someone to build a $5 billion island off Gaza — for a seaport, hotels, airport

The Israeli government is considering a proposal to build an artificial island off the Gaza Strip that a top official says would give Palestinians living in the besieged enclave their one and only seaport — and maybe a hotel and an international airport, too.

The Israeli minister of intelligence who is promoting the plan, Israel Katz, said the Jewish state is actively seeking financial partners for the $5 billion project.

Katz mentioned the Saudis and Chinese as possible builders of the port — or maybe a mysterious Israeli entrepreneur. He declined to name names.

...

He said the plan is being debated in Israel’s security cabinet, where he said it has deep support. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu “is exploring the option but has not yet made a determination,” said an Israeli official involved in the talks. The intelligence minister said he has briefed Obama administration officials on the proposal.

...

The intelligence minister said there would be a checkpoint in the middle of the bridge staffed by international authorities. The island itself would belong to no single country but would have an international legal status and international security forces, he said.

Will that Palestinians claim that this is their ‘land’ too?

I wouldn’t be surprised.

You can take the resort out of Gaza, but it won’t work unless you keep the Gazans out of the resort.

The island can be authorized if the following criteria are met:
1) the island is floating on the water
2) the island is detachable from mainland
3) the island has a giant removable cork underneath
4) provide jobs and services so that at any given time, the majority of all Palestinians are on the island

How about a “Hamas Resort Island” that can be easily blown up?

“would give Palestinians living in the besieged enclave their one and only seaport — and maybe a hotel and an international airport, too.”

Clever move...
Their own Port to import terror supplies and their own Airfield to hijack aircraft from with minimum interference from any security.
Being offshore , very easy to observe.

Anytime you see it say Israel proposes this or that, just realize that it is the U.S. taxpayers that for the bill. We give them billions every year and although I and most here probably support Israel as the only relatively free nation in the area, us paying for their island and nation year after year is ridiculous. Look up the peace treaty between Israel and Egypt and realize that WE - the USA bought their peace and it costs us billions every year in payments to Israel and Egypt.

What a complete waste of money that would be. What an ill-conceived idea.

Israel gave those hate filled Arabs all their agricultural infrastructure, huge value and all in place ready to be continued by the Arabs when Israel more than generously, ridiculous in fact, the whole of the Gaza and its coastal to the Arabs. Within 24 hours, the Arabs had literally destroyed everything that they could have used to pick up the agricultural enterprises and exports, etc.

These Arabs need to be repatriated in their ancestral land, which is Jordan. They came to Israel when they could see that that was going to be a prosperous, free place to live. Israel should not give them anything more. The rest of the world has made the Palestinians richer than anyone. Their leaders keep the money for themselves and use the rest for murderous propaganda and hate incitement.

What could Gaza possibly ever contribute to the world’s economy that would make this a worthwhile investment? It’s just casting pearls before swine.

Why build an airport? They already had an airport...they built it (likely with our money) as part of the Oslo Clinton legacy nonsense...and the Israeli’s bombed it 3 years later. In true mid-eastern madness, the Palestinians staffed the bombed out airport (again likely paid for with our money) for 5 more years.

If they put too many people on it, won’t it tip over?

Perhaps that’s the plan.
