Jo Cox MP death: Thomas Mair in court on murder charge

The man charged with the murder of Labour MP Jo Cox has appeared in court and been remanded in custody.

Thomas Mair gave his name as "Death to traitors, freedom for Britain", when he appeared at Westminster Magistrates' Court.

Mrs Cox, 41, was shot and stabbed in Birstall, West Yorkshire, on Thursday.

Members of her family visited the scene on Saturday to read floral tributes and thank gathered crowds for their support.

This Wednesday, June 22 would have been Jo Cox’s 42nd birthday and her friends are marking it by organising a massive public event in Trafalgar Square at 4pm.

Organisers of the event (‘More in Common – Celebrating the life of Jo Cox’) say it will celebrate ‘Jo’s warmth, love, energy, passion, flair, Yorkshire heritage and the belief in the humanity of every person in every place.’ Simultaneous events will take place in several other locations, including New York, Batley and Spen, Brussels, Washington DC, and Nairobi.

Wow. A gardener type, who everybody describes as apolitical gets into an argument and when an MP intervenes, she gets shot. And right before the Brexit vote. Then the media are packed into a special court chamber and the perp is then trotted out to say two times, "My name is death to traitors, freedom for Britain." and then led away.

This well-timed tragedy sure comes across like cloddish kabuki.

He can get three years for murder, but, for possessing an “offensive weapon,” he can get 27 life terms, while uttering offensive words to a female, he can get 35 life terms and his children and grandchildren 30 life terms, but for making noise within a 300 mile radius of a mosque...
