Mexico once turned a blind eye toward migration. Now, it's cracking down along its southern border.

Along the cocaine corridor that cuts north out of Central America, drug cartels are no longer the primary targets for Mexican police.

Migrants – many young men, mothers and children – are the nation's new persons of interest.

An unprecedented number of Central Americans have been rounded up, arrested and deported by Mexican authorities over the last two years, part of a new crackdown on migration along the country's southern border.

To many experts, this isn't an accident.

Why is this news? Mexico expects Trump to be elected and the wall on Mexico’s northern border to be built and effective. So Mexico doesn’t want to deal with potential invaders from countries south of her who can’t cross the border into the U.S. due to the wall.

It’s all about self-interest with Mexico.

Mexico also doesn’t want to pay for the wall. But they will, one way or another. They must think Trump has a good chance of being elected.

I think we should implement the same type of immigration laws that meh-eek-0 “enjoys”. Not very nice.

This is not new. It has been this way for a long time.

Mexico has NEVER turned a blind eye to its southern border. It has the most restrictive and punitive immigration laws in the world, even built into their Constitution.

The resources in enforcement are inversely correlated to the economy. The worse things get, the more they enforce the borders.

This is just the latest cycle.

Mexico is going to have to build two walls, one on the North and one on the South.

It’s all about self-interest with Mexico.

I have no objection to Mexico closing its southern border and otherwise pursuing its own self-interest. The problem is that while they rightly object to Guatemala and other Central American countries dumping their human dregs on the Mexican side of the border, Mexico insists on its right to dump its dregs across our border. A bigger problem still is that our elected "leaders" in both parties are more than happy to oblige them.

We can thank Donald Trump for this one.

This is a good point actually. A lot of the drug gangs are actually El Salvadorian, not Mexican. A secure Mexico makes the US more secure; I just don’t think leadership in either country is willing to do what it takes.

It isn’t about immigration, it is about MIGRATION. Mexico lets the migrants come through, they are heading to the USA. Mexico does not allow immigrants, people who want to stay in Mexico.

Mexico is just waiting for John Kerry to come down with a trillion dollars to build a bullet train from Guatemala to San Diego with no stops along the way.
