Two men tried to rob a McDonald's in eastern France — only to be violently thwarted by 11 off-duty French special forces commandos who were having lunch there, authorities said.
The two men stormed into a McDonald's in Ecole-Valentin, near Besançon, about 9 p.m. Sunday, France Bleu radio and the French newspaper Connexion reported, quoting the local prosecutor, Edwige Roux-Morizot.
Not spotted by the robbers, however, were 11 men eating lunch who are members of Groupe d'intervention de la Gendarmerie nationale, or GIGN, the French armed forces' elite counterterrorism unit.

Not sure which is more peculiar: That anybody’s Special Forces would be eating at McDonalds or That these eleven hombres malo somehow escaped notice by the would be robbers.

Note to entry-level criminals: if you’re robbing people in a public place, have a look at the people around you. If 11 or so folks are big, beefy guys with short haircuts and wearing jackets on a warm day, turn right around and leave.

I read a different article about this and some local official said they didn’t use their weapons at first because that would be “unacceptable”. I bet they didn’t want to “let the robbery play out”. I’m sure they were held back the same way cops were held back in Baltimore when the riots happened.
