Netanyahu heads to Russia as ties with Moscow strengthen

Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu headed to Moscow this morning, for his third visit to the Kremlin in nine months, as Israel-Russia ties continues to burgeon.

The meeting is the fourth one between Netanyahu and Russia President Vladimir Putin during the same period, after the pair also met at the sidelines of the recent UN climate change conference in Paris. Israeli President Reuven Rivlin has also met with Putin during that time, even cancelling a trip to Australia to visit the Russian leader at the Kremlin.

In an illustration of the growing alliance between their two countries, this time Netanyahu is scheduled to stay in Russia for an extended trip of two and a half days, meeting other leading Russian officials as well as the Russian President.

The official pretext for this visit is to mark 25 years of official diplomatic relations between Israel and Russia. Until then, Israel's relationship with what was then the Soviet Union had been hostile one, with Moscow backing Israel's Arab enemies and declaring itself opposed to Zionism.

Today, however, things are very different. Official explanations aside, the two leaders will be engaging on a range of issues of mutual interest and potential cooperation, most notably the ongoing bloody civil war in Syria.

Russia, which supports Syrian dictator Bashar al-Assad, has been heavily engaged in Syria on the side of the regime. While Israel considers the Assad regime - a close ally of Iran - an enemy, and is still technically at war with it, Jerusalem and Moscow have seen their interests in Syria converge as of late.

Last year, Netanyahu and Putin reached a landmark agreement to coordinate all Israeli and Russian forces in and over the skies of Israel's northern neighbor.

So long as they don't start talking about "unbreakable bonds" or a "moral obligation to defend" us, this might be the start of a beautiful friendship.

In a sense, in many ways, these last 8 Obomination years have spelled a loss in trust and commitment on the part of the United States towards its “Allies: like Israel. Obama abandoned Egypt, Saudi Arabia, Jordan, Israel and other states. Due to that loss of trust, which rest solely on the shoulders of Obama, all the states in the region are forming alliances which up to now, would have been unthinkable. Russia has shown that she is a serious power broker while the US under Obama and Kerry AND Clinton have show they have the spine of a slug. The states in the region are struggling to find alliances against Iran, the state that Obama has now given the green light for to becoming a nuclear menace.

I too would trust Putin (as a realist and an open communist) more than the hate-filled anti-Semite, Muslim-sympathizer/Muslim-promoter, anti-democracy closet ...

Realistic for Israel to keep as good of relations as she can with a powerful big country like Russia. And the situation in Syria required Bibi to do exactly as he did — make a clear understanding with Russia to avoid any accidental conflicts ( especially as regards both countries’ airplanes). Bibi did right to work that out as quickly as he did. There are longer/ term areas of mutuality including trade, travel, resources, all the stuff countries can cooperate about — finally, nobody anywhere in the world can trust America anymore for anything at all what with Obama and Kerry in charge - escort for more and more lies and backstabbing - alas

humm. If they sign a peace treaty, what does this mean prophetically? This could be something to really watch.

The peace treaty is between Israel and the Palestinians for 7 years, not with Russia. Israel does not need a peace treaty with Russia for obvious reasons.

this is purely strategic, given there is no one in the White House to talk to until January.

Another reason I hate Barry Hussein Muhammed Obama.

Also the fact that Russia is now directly and militarily involved in the region, in fact right nearby. If a bear with an attitude is your next door neighbor, you do have to deal with it.

They also urged the resumption of piece talks more times than any other administration before them, and in greater defiance of logic, common sense and simple decency./sarc

And let’s not forget their great work with the Arab Spring. More Arabs have been sproinged by the Arab Spring than were ever sproinged before./s

And they helped the civil war in Syria immeasurably./s

Uh, no. Russia doesn't want its planes and pilots in Syria to tangle with the IAF, and Israel doesn't want to be in a position where it has to shoot down Russian planes. There is no, and isn't going to be any, change in their long term relationship. For a few years now, Iran hasn't been in a position to run missiles to the Hizzies in Lebanon, thanks to IAF interdiction, and since Putin's goons arrived, the Iranians have taken off. Iran built its a-bomb development program with neo-Soviet help, but Russia and Iran are not allies, either.

Don’t be surprised if there’s trade deal announced as a result of this visit, especially if the EU votes to extend their economic sanctions on Russia.

Nothing mentioned about the united states in the bible. it is a non player in prophesy. Russia is alluded to as it was an area known to the bronze age people. they had no concept of the Americas.
