Paul Ryan’s cold embrace of Trump
Politico ^ | June 3, 2016 | LOUIS NELSON

Posted on 06/03/2016 4:38:51 PM PDT by reaganaut1

If there was any doubt that Paul Ryan’s endorsement of Donald Trump was less than full-throated, he crushed it on Friday.

Less than 24 hours after Ryan announced that his “not ready” had become a “ready,” the House speaker ripped into the presumptive Republican nominee, making it clear he will not be Trump’s defender in chief.

Unprompted by WISN radio host Vicki McKenna, Ryan scolded Trump for his racially-based attacks against the federal judge in California overseeing a civil fraud lawsuit against Trump University.

“Look, the comment about the judge the other day just was out of left field for my mind,” Ryan said, after Trump argued that U.S. District Judge Gonzalo Curiel’s Mexican heritage creates "an inherent conflict of interest.”

“It’s reasoning I don’t relate to. I completely disagree with the thinking behind that. And so, he clearly says and does things I don’t agree with, and I’ve had to speak up from time to time when that has occurred, and I’ll continue to do that if it’s necessary. I hope it’s not.”

This is Ryan’s new fate — one day embracing the man taking a blowtorch to the Republican Party, the next day denouncing him.

Ryan’s ambivalence practically leapt off the page of The Janesville Gazette on Thursday. He offered only tepid compliments to Trump and chose not to explain exactly what had changed since May 5, when Ryan went on CNN to declare that he was “just not ready” to endorse Trump.

“I would so love to see Paul Rino Cantored.”

I’d be happy with that, although he deserves to get Moe Greened.

Politically, of course.

:-)

I really worry how much damage Ryan can do in his role as Chairman of the Republican National Convention. He cannot be trusted and he is clearly playing his own game as a third force. Even if he loses his primary, it won’t be until well after the Convention and he will have done his sabotage by then.

Ryan (like Rubio in the Senate) had his chance to do the right thing.

I really don't understand why people here think Ryan should be kissing Trumps ring...

He is in a relatively safe district, Speaker of the House, respects the separation of powers, (I guess only when it applies to republicans since he ignores what Obama does)

He has House members whose district didn't vote for Trump and he feels a need to give them some cover...

Yes, he quasi-endorsed Trump and the convention is months away...

He's not dumb and work with Trump to defeat Hillary...

He's got some leverage and he's using it...kissing Trumps ring would give away that leverage...

Not at all surprising...

It would be nice if he got fully on board the Trump train, but he has other priorities like protecting his members from down ticket issues..

It's politics 101

Trump doesn’t need Paul Ryan.

Neither, in fact, does the GOP if it wants to survive as a political party.

Trump did not criticize the judge because of his “Mexican heritage,” he criticized him, and rightfully so, for being a member of La Raza, a Mexican racist anti-American organization.

Ryan IS dumb, very, very DUMB!

Nobody asked him to "kiss Trump's ring"; however, his arrogant, nasty attitude proves that he is just a damned CINO; as if we all didn't know that anyway.

He isn't in a "safe" district; Trump won it and did you HUGELY! And he is being primared. If I were you, I wouldn't bet on his re-election chances.
