There's no putting a chill on the worldwide air conditioning boom that's expected to heat up to historic levels over the next decade.
Nations with emerging economies and spiking populations - including India, Indonesia and Brazil - are seeing air conditioner sales grow 10 to 15 percent a year. That means the world's supply of A/C units could nearly double from about 900,000 million in 2015 to roughly 1.6 million by 2030, according to a recent Berkeley National Laboratory study.
So instead of simply trying to shut off the inexorable growth, scientists are working to find fresh energy-efficient technologies that could offset the effects A/C units have on the climate.
Reducing the amount of HFCs in the environment would be a better alternative to mitigating climate change than trying to control CO2 use alone, the researchers say.
Scientists worry energy use and emissions will only worsen once countries such as India - known for its extreme heat, but which is still playing catch-up in terms of A/C use - bring millions of units on the grid in order to combat rising temperatures.

As the creep from NBC was writing this “report” in airconditioning.
We built the first building in an industrial park in Wuhan, China. The next month, Gree moved in and built an air-conditioning plant bigger than any GM plant I’ve ever been in. It’s closer to the 747 plant in Seattle. They’re pumping out AC units 24/7 in numbers you wouldn’t believe.
Because the algores and zukerbergs of the world will live without air conditioning, for the sake of the planet.
Just kidding. They will stay nice and comfy all year round.
It’s you and I who will swelter without AC for the sake of the planet.
Once they come for my air conditioning, the rebellion definitely is starting.
The government enviro-Nazis will have to pry my air conditioning out of my COLD dead hands.
If I am made to swelter, I am coming for those who are not sweltering.
They will never know comfort again.
They made me feel guilty - I’m gonna sell my air conditioner today to save the planet.
Psych!!
So how do we do the cost benefit trade off???
I’ve heard that these heat waves in India result in many deaths. Don’t we want to place a premium in human life ??
Do we want to discourage increased use of air cond in places like India and sacrifice lives, just to keep to some nebulous targets relating to global warming???
And who makes these judgments? Liberals who live in the New York/Washington axis ????
If it’s anything like their solutions that leave our clothes dirty after laundering, our dishwashers requiring rinsing agents, and our toilets requiring two flushes instead of one, I can just imagine the joy of the non-cooling, but eco-friendly air conditioner.
Maybe the scientists ought to first work on proving that energy use actually causes climate change.
We're still waiting for that one.

Set up a mega air conditioning plant and sell the coolant to individual buildings just like some large cities sell steam.
Actually AC use is one place that solar makes sense, since the extra electricity is needed at the same time that solar panels are producing peak electricity.
Leo DiCaprio vows to fly his jet around the globe several times to investigate!
Or...you and I will pay a 1000% ‘green’ tax on your new unit. Either way the little guy is screwed.
What they really want is to eliminate 3/4 of the humans on the planet. But they’ll start with the air conditioning.
so what! Then you can go inside from the hot global warming to a nice cool AC.
“As the creep from NBC was writing this report in airconditioning.”
You’re totally right. His point is that people from India and Brazil should not have air conditioniong, but NBC reporters definitely should
