Seattle Homelessness Crisis: City Shutting Down ‘The Jungle’ Camp
International Business Times ^ | 17 May 2016 | Tim Marcin

Amid a homelessness crisis, Seattle plans to shut down an unsanctioned homeless encampment known as "the Jungle," Washington state and city officials announced Tuesday. Officials detailed plans to clean up the area stretching along and under a highway after the people are moved out, the Seattle Times reported.

The announcement comes after a shooting in January that killed two people and wounded three more. Part of the plan is to offer shelter and services to the people living in the encampment, which sits under a freeway. Then the city and state will work to clean up health hazards like human waste and garbage while also removing fire hazards. The state budget earmarked $1 million to fix problems at "the Jungle."

About 300 people are estimated to live at "the Jungle" and some housing has already been set aside for them. Residents' issues include addiction, mental health problems and legal troubles.

"We’re dealing with a difficult population that is a little jaded about the services that are provided," said Jeff Lilley, president of Seattle’s Union Gospel Mission, according to the Times. Lilley added, "we’re going to do our best to provide just about any option that’s reasonable."

Another Obamaville will sprout up someplace else.

This is what they need to be constantly called.

No they don’t...

the original “Hoovervilles” were occupied by American veterans of WWI needing benefits from the govt..

benefits that had been promised and earned by the men...

They camped out around Washington ...

these are not veterans ...

That is very uninviting of them. Where is their Socialist councilman? I’m sure the good people of Seattle can be more magnanimous and provide a nice $15/hour job for these people as well as provide them a house, car, clothing, and a decent cat and/or dog.

I just don’t understand these homeless problems considering how robust the economy is and the low unemployment rate. Perhaps the citizens can donate a small portion of the $2500 per year that they saved from obamacare to help out.

[underlines mine] "We’re dealing with a difficult population that is a little jaded about the services that are provided"

Words fail me.

That’s what I am wondering. Why are there even homeless people in liberal cities like Seattle and San Fran? Seems to me their citizens would pony up the required money to house and fee them all or offer room + board in their own homes.

"...We’re dealing with a difficult population that is a little jaded about the services that are provided..."

Well, isn't that special. How about providing no services at all, and see how damned jaded they feel about that?

They don’t want housing. A bum cannot carry drugs, show up high and drunk, and act civilized with public housing. In my city they have hot meals, showers, TV and private cots for the homeless and they are still under the bridges because they don’t want that stuff. They want drunk, random sex, drugs, crap on the ground.

They should move to the Washington, D.C. area since this area is the richest in the United States. They have the ability to take care of the homeless, especially D.C.

DC heaps them on the garbage pile. They run them out of town and they end up in B’more and Philly.

Rush says West Palm is the place to go for the homeless bums.

Must be the ‘in’ thing to do. Dallas just tried to shut down its largest homeless camp, sending the tramps into other areas of town.

Ha! Another example of progressives/liberals/socialists/democrats (they keep changing names so we cant get a scope on them), screwing up. Bums infesting public places celebrated as homeless victims of a white racist capitalist society. Mini Cuba/Venezuela.

This just can’t be. We are in a golden erase of prosperity that makes the Reagan-Bush years look like the Depression.

Seattle is not the only city shutting down homeless encampments. Dallas recently cleared out an encampment under the I-45 overhead near downtown. Funny, I don’t remember seeing these during Bush’s two terms in office.
