'Sanctuary City' bill would penalize New Orleans

New Orleans is one of two cities in Louisiana identified by some as a so called "Sanctuary City." The other is Lafayette.

A Sanctuary City is defined as a city with policies or laws that limit the extent to which law enforcement and other government employees will go to assist the federal government on immigration matters.

NOPD Superintendent Michael Harrison says immigration is a federal matter and it should be enforced by federal authorities.

"Many chiefs around the country, I stand with them and they stand with us that immigration is not a local police department issue to enforce," Harrison said. "

A 2012 consent decree called for sweeping policy changes within the NOPD.

It barred officers from questioning victims and witnesses of crime about their immigration status.

"When citizens or visitors call us and we respond to those calls, we're not asking them about their immigration status," Harrison said. "We are enforcing the law and providing the public service they ask us to provide when the call us."

A bill now moving through the legislature would prohibit Louisiana cities from receiving state dollars for construction projects if they don't enforce federal immigration laws.

It has the backing of state Attorney General Jeff Landry.

This bill will probably pass but even if the Governor signs it I'm sure the feds will strike it down somehow.

Good for them! That money should go to creating jobs for Americans not Mexicans. But people down in Louisiana should stand up and demand its strict enforcement.

Penalties are, or at least to be, a consequence of breaking the law.

You idiot, asking them their legal status IS enforcing the law. No, you're doing a disservice to your US citizen public.

Good! That’s the whole point of the bill. Lawless liberal policies should have consequences.

Imagine how quickly the law would spring into action if New Orleans, or any other town, became a "Tax Sanctuary City."

Class is dismissed.

Consent decree? If the Fed courts are telling them to do one thing, it’s insanity to expect to legislate otherwise isn’t it?

When I was working as a LEO in the PNW in the 70's & 80's, we ran an immigration check on every Suspect we thought might be an illegal. If they were. Then we would hold them in our little city jails until Borber Patrol made the rounds to pick them up.
Sometimes it would be weeks. Sometimes a month or two. We never bitched about it. Nor did the cities as they got paid.

So if I rob a bank in NOLA, and the police catch me, I can just say that bank robberies are a federal responsibility then, right?

He’s a Democrat but I believe that this will be a popular enough bill that he will sign it. We will see.

NOPD Superintendent Michael Harrison says immigration is a federal matter and it should be enforced by federal authorities.

So does this mean his officers will refuse to enforce ALL federal crimes? Anything the FedGov has made illegal, he ignores? Or just the immigration stuff cause he's pro-illegals? On the same track, NO isn't the state. Does he not enforce state law either? Only NO laws?
