(Reuters) - Dozens of people were arrested in Washington state on Sunday, two days after protesters set up a blockade on railroad tracks leading to a pair of oil refineries as part of a global protest over dependence on fossil fuels, authorities said.

The protesters, camping out on BNSF Railway [BNISF.UL] tracks at Anacortes, Washington, about 70 miles (113 km) north of Seattle, refused police orders to disperse, said Katie McCulloch, a spokesman for the Skagit County Department of Emergency Management.

All of the 52 protesters under arrest were charged with trespassing, while one person was also charged with resisting arrest, according a statement on the department’s website. No injuries were reported.

Billed as Break Free 2016, the protests on six continents are part of a 12-day campaign to call attention to climate change and to demand a transition to clean energy, according to the organization’s website.

"Break Free is about pressuring the system so we get the change we need, but it's also about imagining an alternative," said Ahmed Gaya, an organizer for Break Free Pacific Northwest.

Paid protesters most likely - usually advertise in local papers with wage and bail info.

Stick them all in a cave and have them light their farts for heat and light.

They should hold them for the maximum 48 hours, and make them lose a few days pay. I guess I should add the disclaimer “if they even work for a living”.

From the comments section:

“Diane 43 minutes ago

I live in the area. Guess how these protesters got to the tracks...Right! In automobile that use gas and oil.”

That was my first thought.

Back in the ‘90 I worked with one of these types, who bragged how she took part in closing the entrance to a nuclear plant in the name of anti-fossil fuels.

I asked her how she and her friends got up there and she replied “By car.” I asked her if she saw the irony in that answer. “No.”

Hubby and I saw video on the local news last night. He sat thru the video and had a running commentary on all of the things that the protestors were wearing or using that were made with petroleum/oil.

The Left is an Irony Free Zone.

Like those fools in WA who paddled out in their plastic kayaks wearing their GoreTex outfits to protest the Shell Oil rig being moved to Alaska.

It takes a special kind of stupid to pitch a tent on the tracks.

Anyone take a pic of the parking lot as the community agitators were returning to their climate controlled dwellings?

Leaving aside that a nuclear plant does not burn coal or other hydrocarbon fuels. And the stupidly called "fossil fuels" - as if fossils, which are former living things, dead, buried and turned to stone, could ever be used as a fuel!

You are correct re “fossil fuels,” but it is almost a religion to some. It is petroleum, plain and simple.

I yearn for the old days, when railroads hired goons to beat the brakes off of anyone who interfered.

fossil fuels

Petroleum geologists use tiny ancient "microfossils" to find oil. The study of tiny ancient fossils is called micropaleontology.

I doubt that they're "stupid".

Yeah, that's what got me as well, although, as usual, I didn't think of that until later. Don't think it would have made much difference to her though.

She also went to some Jesse Jackson rally (she's white) and said that when a guy came around asking for donations to Jesse, she chipped in her last $20. I asked her how did she know it was for Jesse and not just some dude milking the crowd. A look of "I've been had!" came over her but she didn't say anything.

Find the cars they drove to the protest and drain the fuel tanks. See how much they hate fossil fuels then.
