Rob Portman criticizes North Carolina 'bathroom law,' Trump's national debt plan

COLUMBUS, Ohio—U.S. Sen. Rob Portman on Monday criticized North Carolina's restrictions on public bathroom access for transgender people and took issue with Donald Trump's proposal to cut the national debt by giving creditors less than full payment.

The Ohio Republican, speaking with reporters at a warehouse in Columbus, said North Carolina's new limits on protections for lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender people are "a bad law."

"You need to not discriminate against people and be sure that we are respecting religious liberties," Portman said. "That can be done, and I do not believe that the North Carolina law accomplishes that."

Portman, who came out in support of same-sex marriage in 2013 after his son revealed he was gay, pointed to Utah's anti-discrimination law, which he said "achieved that balance."

The senator also voiced caution about reducing the national debt by persuading creditors to accept less than full payment, as suggested Friday by Trump, the presumptive GOP nominee.

Portman, who has endorsed Trump, said while he hasn't reviewed the details of Trump's proposal, the way to address the $19.2 trillion national debt "is not to take away from the full faith and credit that people believe they have when they buy treasuries."

He added, "I would be concerned about anything that would take away from that."

Portman's comments came after he accepted an endorsement from the National Federation of Independent Business.

Juanita Duggan, the new president of the Washington, D.C.-based NFIB, said small business owners "don't have a more dependable ally in Washington than Rob Portman," noting the senator has a 100-percent voting record for the group's key issues.

For the record, there was a primary opponent to Portman. I bothered to do research and voted for the guy. He had little name recognition and no ads, so unfortunately, he lost in a landslide. A lot of people, including some of my family voted for Portman because he had the name recognition.

“is not to take away from the full faith and credit that people believe they have when they buy treasuries.”

Who’s got full faith when we’re $20 trillion in debt?

Pay our creditors less than full value? Where does Trump get this crap? Ask yourselves, who will lend to us at anything less than high rates if we refuse to pay back our debts?

“Portman, who has endorsed Trump, said while he hasn’t reviewed the details of Trump’s proposal”

So why are you commenting on it?

He is an ex establishment pretty boy of no actual substance or accomplishment. I checked and this guy never made a payroll, never built anything and has never worked outside of government. He wants high school boys to urinate and take showers with high school girls. He wants grown men exposing themselves to female children in bathrooms. North Carolina does NOT want that. We don’t have dictatorial law making by the Department of Justice!! We actually make our laws in Congress and signed by the president or they aren’t laws at all!!
As far as his comment on Trump— I guess he can comment all he wants by he couldn’t shine Trump’s shoes!!

I was not agreeing with Trump on this. I was just pointing out that anyone that has “full faith” in our nation’s ability to resolve the $20 trillion and growing debt need to question their “full faith.”

If we continue the same path for just two to three more years, we are beyond turning it around. We may be past the point of no return already.

“while he hasn’t reviewed the details of Trump’s proposal”

In other words, Portman put his mouth in gear before engaging his brain...

Portman, who came out in support of same-sex marriage in 2013 after his son revealed he was gay,

I feel sorry for him. The shame he must feel for having a gay son.

Portman should understand--if he is not just looking to have something to say--that the market value of negotiable debt instruments is not confined to their face value. In times of rising interest rates, existing debt issues will fall in price--depending of course in large measure on the length of time until the promised repayment.

Donald Trump's willingness to repurchase at strategic times is only sound business--indeed, necessary business as part of a larger plan to get us out of the present mess.

So far as your point with respect to the debt level, it is important to understand, as frankly Trump does understand, that we have been defaulting on our debt by Keynesian tactics, in terms of actual value, since 1933. (Debt Default.)

"You need to not discriminate against people and be sure that we are respecting religious liberties,"

in the libturd world the street only goes in one direction thus no room for those apposing their views by wanting to keep public restrooms confined to single sex. It's astounding how a minority class of folks demand the rest of us accept with open arms their ungodly lifestyles. Maybe the Federal government should mandate that all public businesses provide/install an exclusive third restroom just for those people who don't know what sex they are.

—””You need to not discriminate against people and be sure that we are respecting religious liberties,”

Yes, Mr. Portman, but Trannies have complicated the definition of what “people” are. These aren’t typical “people.” It’s their OWN doing, not ours, so they have to deal with the consequences.

If society believes that after a sex change, a person is still their original gender (same brain, same mind, just mutilated genitals) — THEN they probably should continue to use restrooms matching their ORIGINAL Gender.

But what if we made a balloon payment....and got rid of some of that interest?? Plenty of countries that could use a "an infusion" right now.

And countries default on us all the time....and we give them MORE money.
