WASHINGTON (ABC7) California is taking a big step toward getting tobacco out of the hands of teenagers.
It has raised the age at which cigarettes, e-cigarettes and chewing tobacco can be bought from 18 to 21. Hawaii is the only other state that has passed a similar law.
Lunch time at the District's Woodrow Wilson High School had teens flooding into Tenleytown.
A few were smoking, most were not. When asked about the law, teenager Mariah Auth, who has been smoking for three years said she thinks the law is a good idea. She's currently trying to kick the habit.

If they are old enough to vote then they are old enough to smoke.
They’re worried about health and safety?
And they turn around and license 16 or 17 year olds to get behind the wheel of a 5,000 pound machine traveling at 65mph?
lol...
‘’What are you in for?’’
‘’Smoking.’’
Voting age ought to be raised to 30 yrs.
18 is not old enough to vote imho but I know most disagree with me.
I agree with you.
Accept for weed of course.
Old enough to kill or be killed in service of country but not old enough to drink a beer or smoke a Marlboro.
Then 18 is not old enough to kill or be killed in service of your country. Correct?
No, not correct. I’ve never understood that correlation. And btw you can join up at 17.
So this law does not cover smoking marijuana?
And if we extend this logic then if you’re old enough to serve in the military you’re old enough to be a senator or president.
“What are you in Juvie for?”
“Smoking.”
“18 is not old enough to vote imho but I know most disagree with me.”
I agree with you. And I also believe that anyone who is under 21 years of age should not be involuntarily conscripted into our military. Let’s just make 21 the age of majority for EVERYTHING. I am damned tired of a$$holes like LBJ, GHWB, and GWB and the members of The Congress, sending minors off to get killed for NOTHING, while they somehow manage to make sure that their minor offspring miss out on the opportunity to get themselves killed for NOTHING! We’ve not fought a LEGITIMATE WAR since WWII, and yet, we’ve probably lost neary 100,000 young people in Korea, Vietnam, a bunch of “Police Actions” around the world, and more recently in that worthless Shithole collectively called the Middle East. Then, there’s also the issue of the indiscriminant pi$$ing away of trillions of dollars prosecuting these ill-advised actions. We seemingly NEVER go after those who are really responsible for attacks against us (can you say Saudi Arabia and Wahabbist Islam).
Would you still allow 18 year olds to volunteer?
A lot of people from California are clueless in every way about the connection between shouldering responsibility and rights.
We chalk your weird position up to being from Calipornia.
I have zero problem with raising the minimum military age.
What’s magic about 21? Why not raise it to 35 or somehthing like that?
“Would you still allow 18 year olds to volunteer?”
Why would we want to do that? To make 21 the age of majority suggests that human beings who are under that age do not have the ability to decide that question for themselves because of their age. California is saying with respect to smoking, that until you are 21 you are not “adult enough” to make up your own mind about taking up that habit. So it follows that they surely don’t have the mental capacity to decide for themselves if they want to take the chance that they might get killed. It would be an interesting change if we proscribed the ability to send minor children to war.
