SEOUL, May 3 (UPI) -- South Korean police are investigating a large stack of counterfeit North Korean bills found at a Seoul thrift store.

The massive pile of fake North Korean money weighed about 330 pounds, and was found in a heap of wastepaper in southwestern Seoul, Yonhap reported.

The counterfeit money was printed in 5,000 North Korean won denominations. There is no official exchange rate for the currency.

The store proprietor discovered the bills on Tuesday afternoon after he purchased the recyclable material from a man and a woman, who both appeared to be in their 40s.

The proprietor alerted authorities by late evening.

South Korea's intelligence agency and military are investigating the bills alongside police, local television network KBS reported.

Funny money. Burn it in N Korea for light and heat.

I’m talking about the Norks REAL money.

Funny that the counterfeit Nork money was found in South Korea.

(I would have expected it to be a government-run program going the other way around: The Nork’s getting money by counterfeiting SKorea bills and sending the counterfeits internationally to be exchanged to make money for the Nork’s.

Put it in a helicopter and drop it over Pyongyang. Then print up some more and do it again and again until North Korea is no longer. Better than a neutron bomb.

NORK paper money is so worthless it is being disposed of in “dollar stores”?

Somewhere, somehow, could there be a message about socialism?

Why would a communist country need money?

“Why would a communist country need money?”

Basically tokens for getting a portion of distributed goods. A state cashier gives you bills every month and you go exchange them for food, etc at a state store.

The state determines how much everyone gets paid and what each item costs

I’d be more concerned if authorities in South Korea found large stacks of counterfeit American dollars or Euros. North Korea has one of the most advanced forgery operations in the world, with printing presses and technicians whose skills rival that of the U.S. Bureau of Engraving and Printing.

The phony $100 bills that come out of the DPRK are exceptionally high quality and difficult for even veteran Secret Service agents to distinguish from the genuine article. For years, counterfeiting has been a major source of revenue for Pyongyang, and the DPRK is quite adept at producing large quantities of phony U.S. currency.

On the other hand, NK’s own currency is virtually worthless.

With modern cultures that type of destruction can be done with a computer - with North Korea you'd really have to drop the money from the sky... odd place.
