Death at the stake was decreed for those convicted of those specific crimes.
Note the date: After the Great Schism (A.D. 1054). Unlike Rome, the Orthodox enforced rigorous discipline.
I’m a Catholic, but I find it hard to defend a Pope who picks and chooses his battles with “Who am I to judge?”.
