INDIANAPOLIS – Two Republican contenders for the state's open U.S. Senate seat are getting a new appreciation for all of Indiana's 36,418 square miles.
Leading to next week's primary, airwaves are filling with messages to bolster the campaigns of Todd Young and Marlin Stutzman in their increasingly bitter fight to face Democratic contender Baron Hill in the fall.
The candidates, themselves, are crisscrossing the long state and logging countless hours on two-lane highways, in between appearances in coffee shops in small cities and local Lincoln Day dinners in rural counties.
Each man – both were elected to Congress in 2010 as reliable conservatives from reliably conservative districts — is trying to convince voters of his conservative credentials, in an election year dominated by anti-establishment anger.
“We’ve driven 50,000 miles since August,” said a weary-looking Young, coffee in hand, at the Grand Traverse Pie Company in Terre Haute on a recent Saturday morning. “I’ll go anyplace, anywhere to meet with voters.”

Primary is next Tuesday May 3rd!!
Early voting is in force in Indiana, but the lines were still longer than I’ve ever seen for a primary. I supported Stutzman.
I hope Stutzman wins; has IN ever elected anyone good since Homer Capehart?

Excellent. Stutzman was willing to stand up to the party bosses in the House. We need him in the Senate to stand up to McConnell.
I believe he has already been defeated twice as the incumbent in his Congressional District after serving several terms in the U.S. House of Representatives both times. He got beat in two of the huge GOP blowout off year elections.
He was a highly recruited basketball player and was considered the best high school point guard in Indiana around 1971.
No youthful scandals to report that I know about.
He brought his high school girlfriend to college, and she was allowed to live in a Senior woman, on-campus apartment as a Freshman, which created a minor scandal among the women - but none of the guys cared as long as the basketball team won!
It would be a shame if Stutzman doesn’t win. But Young is still better than that guy that dropped out, and an improvement over Coats.
