Austrian government in shock as far-right triumphs

VIENNA (AFP) -

Austria's government was licking its wounds Monday after a historic debacle that saw the opposition anti-immigrant far-right triumph in a presidential ballot two years before the next scheduled general election.

According to preliminary results, Norbert Hofer of the Freedom Party (FPOe) came a clear first with 36 percent of the vote, while candidates from the two governing parties failed to even make it into a runoff on May 22.

The result means that for the first time since 1945, Austria will not have a president backed by either Chancellor Werner Faymann's Social Democrats (SPOe) or their centre-right coalition partners the People's Party (OeVP).

"This is the beginning of a new political era," FPOe leader Heinz-Christian Strache said after what constituted the best-ever result at federal level for the former party of the late Joerg Haider, calling it a "historic result".

The centre-right OeVP's candidate Andreas Khol came equal fourth with 11 percent, level with the SPOe's Rudolf Hundstorfer.

In shock? Idiots.

Memo to Euro socialists: most European citizens don’t want their governments to commit cultural/national suicide. And more and more are beginning to realize that this is precisely what is happening.

The socialists have been promising utopia for years, if the citizens would just elect them. The socialists cannot deliver. It looks like the citizens are figuring that out.

I suspect this is more about stopping the Muslim invasion than a rejection of socialism.

It’s almost funny anymore.

If the media ANYWHERE starts whining and wailing about “Right wing nutcases” where an election happens, you just gotta know the voters (the real ones) have finally had enough and started to kick all of these socialist elitists to the curb. Along with, by the way, their pimps in the media.

If you’re opposed to Islam, now they call you a Nazi.

Austrian voters disagreed.

This could send a subtle green light to millions of Austrians that the pampered protected Muslims in their midst, committing outrages & atrocities on “infidels”, might not be so protected after all.

The Polizei might be directed to pull back, so that bashing a marauding muzzie’s teeth in doesn’t lead to automatic arrest & hate crime charges, if you get my drift.

2016 seems to be a Velvet Revolution.

I wonder when the Powers That Be drop the hammer on us all.

It only takes an IED to turn velvet into bloody scraps. That’s what comes next to Europe. The traitors need it, and the invaders want it.

Ta-rump effect. Next, Brexit when Britain thumbs it’s nose at Obama and exits the EU.

They need something a little bigger, if they are to suppress all of us.

Hmm. Better make sure my Georgia Power electric bill is paid.

Actually the Nazi movement was more Left wing than Right wing.

Government control of the economy, suppression of free speech, seizure of private assets, keeping guns out of hands of citizens, etc.

Definitely more of a Left wing ideology. In fact, Nazi stands for National Socialist German Worker's Party. It's a travesty that we've allowed Nazism to be portrayed as anything close to "Right wing".

The Weimar Republic which preceded the Nazi regime was closer to U.S. style democracy and capitalism - though poorly executed.

I’m not sure that’s the case. One anti-immigrant party gets the pluarilty with 35% while the other pro-immigrant parties split the remaining 65%.

Europe is finished. Even if they “woke up” now, it would be too late.

Yes, Merkel might be considering an “Anschluss” right about now.
