Environmentalists truly believed and predicted during the first Earth Day in 1970 that the planet was doomed unless drastic actions were taken.

Humanity never quite got around to that drastic action, but environmentalists still recall the first Earth Day fondly and hold many of the predictions in high regard.

So this Earth Day, The Daily Caller News Foundation takes a look at predictions made by environmentalists around the original Earth Day in 1970 to see how they’ve held up.

Have any of these dire predictions come true? No, but that hasn’t stopped environmentalists from worrying.

From predicting the end of civilization to classic worries about peak oil, here are seven environmentalist predictions that were just flat out wrong.

Cain't fix stoopid. But it'll cost you plenty to try. Time to go crank up the Hemi and let it idle in the driveway for a few hours. Oh, and the AC and all the lights should be coming on any time now.

What is stunning is that although all of this was wrong, its philosophy is still inter-weaved in liberal thinking.

Today is the one day of the year that I turn all the lights in the house on, and leave them on, until I want to go to sleep.

I’ll save everybody some time:

1: “Civilization Will End Within 15 Or 30 Years”

2: “100-200 Million People Per Year Will Be Starving To Death During The Next Ten Years”

3: “Population Will Inevitably And Completely Outstrip Whatever Small Increases In Food Supplies We Make”

4: “Demographers Agree Almost Unanimously … Thirty Years From Now, The Entire World … Will Be In Famine”

5: “In A Decade, Urban Dwellers Will Have To Wear Gas Masks To Survive Air Pollution”

6: “Childbearing [Will Be] A Punishable Crime Against Society, Unless The Parents Hold A Government License”

7: “By The Year 2000 … There Won’t Be Any More Crude Oil”

Now, go turn on all your lights this evening.

At the risk of demonstrating my inherent egocentrism, I was 15 on the first Earth Day. Our school (in Yokohama, no less) had an Earth Day assembly, and I gave the Big Speech. Don’t remember what I said, but it was probably the usual environmentalist claptrap of the time. It took the better part of ten years for me to grow out of that type of thinking, though I am quite glad I finally did.

At least Western Civilization will.

My environmental policy would be: “You must clean up the mess you make.”

The irony about all the starvation hyperbole is that agricultural output has increased significantly in the last half a century, making vastly more food available to the world. Why? More advanced farming methods, including industrial-scale ranching and cropping; better hybrid (read “genetically engineered”) seedstock; and ... wait for it ... greater use of agri-chemicals such as pesticides, herbicides, and fertilizers — the very things the environazis rebelled against.

What is stunning is that although all of this was wrong, its philosophy is still inter-weaved in liberal thinking.

Without naming names, there are religions that predict the apocalypse to occur at such-and-such a time, and when it doesn't, then they try again, and again, and again. One would think people would "get it" in both instances, but cultic thinking does not lend itself to either Scriptural understanding or human reason, and liberalism is the largest-populated cult of our time.

The Entire World … Will Be In Famine
Not only wrong, but here in the US (and probably many other countries) we have just the opposite - an obesity problem.

Kinda like the doppers DIDN’T do in the san fran smoke out on 4/20? I heard they left 15,000+ pounds of trash behind. Guess they were too stoned to remember to pick up all the pizza boxes and tater chip bags.

My environmental policy would be: “You must clean up the mess you make.”

Make all cities place the Intake for their municipal water system one mile downstream of the Discharge of the city's sewage system. (Yea, I know you'd be fighting gravity a bit more with the pumping)

"Put it back into the river as clean or cleaner than you took it out!"

It would turn most of the citizens into environmental watchdogs! Beginning with what they dump down their own drains.
