FBI Director James Comey has hinted that the FBI paid more than $1 million to break into the locked iPhone used by one of the San Bernardino attackers.

WASHINGTON (AP) -- FBI Director James Comey hinted at an event in London on Thursday that the FBI paid more than $1 million to break into the locked iPhone used by one of the San Bernardino attackers.

Comey was asked during a question-and-answer session at an Aspen Security Forum event how much the FBI paid for the method from an unidentified third-party to access the phone.

He did not give a precise number but said it was "more than I will make in the remainder of this job, which is seven years and four months, for sure." He added that he thought the payment was "worth it."

The Justice Department last month revealed that an entity outside the government had approached it with a method that could be used to open the phone used by Syed Farook, who along with his wife killed 14 people in the December attacks before dying in a police shootout.

FBI Director James Comey says that buying the tool to unlock the Apple iPhone 5C work phone carried by Syed Farouk while he worked for the San Bernardino County Department of Health cost more than what Comey will be paid for the seven years and four months he has left as director of the FBI! That's well in excess of a million dollars. — PING!

And yet they allowed reporters and other people into the crime scene hours after the terrorist attack? There was no dusting for fingerprints and their identifications (such as passports) were filmed by newscrews?

This is complete bs.

P.L. 90-351, 6/19/1968, The Omnibus Crime Control and Safe Streets Act.
TITLE VI-CONFIRMATION OF THE DIRECTOR OF THE FEDERAL BUREAU OF INVESTIGATION

Sec. 1101. Effective as of the day following the date on which the present incumbent in the office of Director ceases to serve as such, the Director of the Federal Bureau of Investigation shall be appointed by the President, by and with the advice and consent of the Senate, and shall receive compensation at the rate prescribed for level II of the Federal Executive Salary Schedule.

As of 2016, the level II Federal Executive Salary is $185,100 per year, not counting bonuses. Ergo, the cost of the tool to unlock the iPhone 5C was more than $1,311,125.00!

And the worst part is that they didn’t get anything additionally useful out of it.

Had they, they’d be announcing subsequent arrests, based on what they got out of the phone. Looks like they “found” what they already knew from other means in the investigation.

Still no word on what they found on the phone for that amount of money? Probably too embarrassed to say there was nothing on it.

Actually, according to the FBI, they said they found a very interesting, and useful, NOTHING.

FBI HASN’T FOUND ANYTHING USEFUL ON SAN BERNARDINO SHOOTER’S IPHONE YET

That’s what happens when you use crony capitalism to let sole source contracts .... probably could have competitively bid it for a half or third of it, or even just dropped or reduced the charges on a couple of the hackers they have arrested and got it for free!

It was one of those kind of things that only one source could do it. Others were working on finding a way to do it. . . but apparently only one found a way to do it.

That's probably a lot more than they spent keeping tabs on them since they supposedly had them "on their RADAR".

What a waste of our money - leg irons and bullets are so much cheaper and effective.
