They aren't saying that because Cruz is a "real" conservative. (No one as underhanded as Cruz can possibly be conservative.) They are saying that because they are setting the stage to crush Cruz the moment they get Trump out of the way. Their strategy is to paint Cruz as some crazy right-wing zealot that no one would ever vote for.
Trump is the golden goose who is exciting the anti-leftist base and waking up people who did not even realize they had a beef against the left.
