Klamath Basin agreement removes four dams restores fisheries

April 6, 2016 In one of the largest river restoration efforts in the nation, state and federal officials, along with private industry, have agreed to remove four hydroelectric dams on the Klamath River, potentially returning the river’s historic fish runs and advancing their recovery.

The agreement, signed today by the governors of California and Oregon, Interior Secretary Sally Jewell, NOAA Administrator Kathryn Sullivan, and the president and CEO of Pacific Power, was characterized as an initial step in the long-term goal of restoring the river basin. The agreement supports efforts to recover fisheries and sustain the region’s farmers and ranchers, benefiting both the environment and the communities which rely on the Klamath.

The dams, which needed to be retrofitted to provide passages for fish such as salmon and steelhead, will be removed beginning in 2020.

For a bit of history on the issue from just a few years ago. The article I read dated 2013 said the dam removal would not take place, however on the second attempt at search I could not locate it.

What came up was this: http://www.freerepublic.com/focus/f-news/3394673/posts

Considering the loss of many coal fired power plants in the last three years I would say your question is valid, but it doesn’t seem to be part of the equation.

Maybe when the grid begins to exhibit some instability?

They’ll probably just have weekly blackouts like in SoCal. Socialism is the reason we can’t have nice things.

They tried to do it legally, and it failed. So now they think that can just do it anyway. (”it” = remove the dams). I expect that there may be legal challenges that will delay this past 2020.

The American people are extraordinarily stupid, because they keep electing tyrants and dictators who do things like this. Well, it’s either stupidity or insanity. Take your pick, but it’s one or the other.

This is about destroying farming, industry, and population growth.

Are we supposed to believe that “restoring fisheries” is a national priority?

In someone’s mind evidently. I would ask, having years of reduced salmon migration you going to bet your life on a return of the fish by ripping out what runs the American engine?

Issue bonds to build nuke power stations, like WHOOPS, er, WPPSS, did around 1980, give or take.

There was a story, just yesterday I think, about planned blackouts coming this summer to California.

I suppose this must be what they're thinking:
PacifiCorp Bringing New Solar Facility Online

7MW. During peak sun, of course.

O r e g o n = S U N

Now why didn’t I think of that. Perfect use for an old mill site. Wonder what the daily winter time production would be compared to a site in Southern CA? Does the thousand house goal still apply on cloudy winter days?
