Voters in Ferguson, Missouri, rejected a property tax increase that would have helped fund changes to its police department required by the U.S. Justice Department after the city erupted in violence following the shooting of a black teenager in 2014.
A new sales tax did pass, but the city will still be left with a financial shortfall as the property tax proposal did not meet the required two-thirds threshold to be enacted. The city may try to put the proposal on the ballot again in August.
"There is still a deficit," Ferguson Mayor James Knowles said on Wednesday, the day after the vote. "There is still a gap."
The fatal shooting of unarmed Michael Brown, 18, by Ferguson police officer Darren Wilson, who is white, exposed friction between the city government and the largely black community. Ferguson erupted into violent protests after a grand jury chose not to indict the officer.
A U.S. investigation released in 2015 found systemic racial bias by police targeted blacks and created a "toxic environment" in Ferguson.
A new city budget, including recommendations made by the Justice Department, must be signed by June 30. The Justice Department sued the city earlier this to force compliance with the agreement, which requires Ferguson's police department to give officers bias-awareness training and implement an accountability system.

Yep there are ironies here.
Ferguson had been about 1/3 white and 2/3 black. I’m sure after the Brown shooting and violence, the remaining whites have either moved or plan to move out. Within a few years Ferguson will be totally ghetto.
I thought I heard Starbucks was going to open in Ferguson? They wanted to show they are a socially responsible business and all that??
What’s the problem? Can’t some Federal judge just order the tax increases and anything else the DOJ SJWers want? Anybody who objects is racist and subject to whatever sanctions and direct action the new overlords determine.

Please don’t fall for media lies. The vast majority “protesters” in Ferguson were paid “activists” who were bussed in at great expense to commit all of the destruction.
I do not buy that many if any of the citizens of Ferguson, black or white, were the culprits. They are, as always, the victims of the media smear of American citizens. They bore the brunt of the violence, and now the government wants to tax them to pay for it again.

Exactly my thinking. And new sales tax makes necessities more expensive which results in more crime which results in more businesses and responsible citizens leaving. This is how you get a Detroit.
You’re not wrong, but I never heard or saw any locals calling out the paid agitators. Maybe I missed it. And come to think of it, how would they get their message out? Start a counter riot?
Since going room temperature, I wonder how many lives have been spared robbery, violence, etc. from Michael Brown? Wonder how many dollars (victim costs, police costs, etc.) have been saved because this punk is off of the street.
I hope all these thugs in clown pants continue their race to the finish line and stand proudly (in memoriam at least) with their very own Darwin Award. The world is better off without them.

But wait . . . here’s a simple solution:
Demand that white liberals “Diversify” Fergie. They can bring their economic power, gay spouses, affirmative action-minded, sympathetic kids, (”Here, Oppressed Ones, take my scholarship and job offers”)
They can open cutsie, artsy little shops in burned out hoods (e.g. paraphernalia, condoms/sex toys, “art” galleries, ACLU SPLC storefronts, cheap motels for quickies), establish diversified hood patrols, integrate the schools, increase the tax base, control the evil police, look the other way re weed and hookers (”victimless crimes”), and of course, bring their superior intellect and condescending attitudes to “help” and “pity” the black man.
Just think of the benefits to everyone.
Do it libs, show us your “Diversifying” capabilities and that you’re not self absorbed hypocrites.
I think (if legally possible) the city of Ferguson should unincorporate and dissolve.
I don’t know how it is done, but I do know it has been done.
