Men in the U.S. illegally are more likely to work than their native-born counterparts, and theyre willing to take jobs pretty much regardless of how much or little they get paid, new research from Harvard University finds.
The study fleshes out the behavior of undocumented workersa group that by its nature can be difficult to analyze.
The challenge of studying the roughly 11.3 million illegal immigrants in the U.S. leaves policy makers guessing on the implications for a wide range of proposalsfrom offering such workers a path to citizenship to kicking them out of the country.
To help fill in some gaps in policy assumptions, Harvard University professor George Borjas used newly developed statistical methods to sift through native-born, legal and illegal workers showing up in the Census Bureaus Current Population Survey (the same survey that informs the Labor Departments monthly employment report). Mr. Borjas arrives at three initial conclusions....

that’s the whole point, right?
To their credit, yes.
And many of them base their work decision based on a peso-centric evaulation of the wage offered by that job.
Why is that some huge surprise..?
There are stories of Mexican doctors in very hard times doing menial cross-border jobs, and that was a rational decision at different historical junctures.
When you can cross and imaginary line and instantly get a 300 percent raise.....This isn’t too complex.
Is it really less? After I get raked over the coals with taxes and other deductions, I make a lot less than advertised. Illegals work tax-free and don’t pay anything for the benefits they receive.
that’s GREAT....for businesses.
for American workers, no so great.
over here i see landscapers, construction workers, know of many housecleaners, and they are almost all Mexican except for the owners.
I wonder how much this study costed?
Let’s see.
Illegal aliens will work cheap.
I did not know that.

Exactly. It’s a two edged sword. On one hand they may be more responsible (if they aren’t criminals). On the other hand they are displacing citizens who want to work.
Many of them work for cash, and that is on top of Food stamps, Section 8 housing and zillions of other little benefits, the latest proposal for which is “The Diaper Divide”.
I heard somewhere that between 1/3 and 1/2 the population of Los Angeles County works ONLY for cash, totally off the books.
What % of the women and anchor babies work?
Victor Davis Hansen wrote a great article on how desperate Mexican illegals offer white middle or even lower-middle class people a chance to “PLAY ARISTOCRACY”:
You have a gardener, a nanny, maybe a cook...
I thought it was a savage, but not completely unworthy point.
I love the “11 million” number. There are more than that just in California. The lying, traitorous sacks of crap in the media, politics and business will keep the 11 million number for decades
Let’s see, this brilliant team of academics forgot to correct for age and disability, right? How many disabled taco benders made the trek across the desert to enter illegally? How many 60-80 year old men? How many well off early retirees?
This is freshman level incompetence - except for the fact that it gave the WSJ a headline.
Yeah, “11.3,” just to make it look like they really know.
Nearby there is a town called “Carmel”, where the former mayor was Clint Eastwood.
There was a home invasion a couple months back:
The terrified, wealthy home owners were amazed at how professional the thieves were —seemed to know exactly what they were looking for, as they threatened them in their pajamas.
Then they suddenly realize one of the masked men was their GARDENER.

WSJ LOVES open borders for just that reason.
