Bison coming 'home' to Montana Indian reservation

BILLINGS, Mont. (AP) — Descendants of a bison herd captured and sent to Canada more than 140 years ago will be relocated to a Montana American Indian reservation next month, in what tribal leaders bill as a homecoming for a species emblematic of their traditions.

The shipment of animals from Alberta's Elk Island National Park to the Blackfeet Indian Reservation follows a 2014 treaty among tribes in the United States and Canada. That agreement aims to restore bison to areas of the Rocky Mountains and Great Plains where millions once roamed.

"For thousands of years the Blackfeet lived among the buffalo here. The buffalo sustained our way of life, provided our food, clothing, shelter," Blackfeet Chairman Harry Barnes said. "It became part of our spiritual being. We want to return the buffalo."

The 89 plains bison, also known as buffalo, will form the nucleus of a herd that tribal leaders envision will soon roam freely across a vast landscape: the Blackfeet reservation, nearby Glacier National Park and the Badger-Two Medicine wilderness — more than 4,000 square miles combined.

It's good to be the leader; at least, the view changes...

Maybe they can build Tee Pees again, and help the house shortage.

The federal wolves must be running out of deer and cattle to eat.

They seem to be doing alright. I just read where a wolf pack killed off 19 elk in one go. The article called it “sport hunting.”

Or government bureaucrats.

Where they will promptly be overhunted. Worth watching only to reinforce the complete lack of “ecological” knowledge possessed by “native” Americans.

Uh, the indigenous won’t be using tools from the White man will they? Those would include: horses, guns, and metal tools.

Probably set up an industrial operation, funded by Wall Street, which goes defunct when there’s no buffalo left to butcher, so they declare bankruptcy. Then the creditors try to serve a writ on the reservation and are told no dice, paleface fancy legal stuff has no jurisdiction here...Wall Street hands the bill to the taxpayers.

Yeh the aggressive 200 LB Canadian Timber wolves the Federal govt introduced to some western states and are trying pass it off as re-introducing the Northwestern gray wolf which is nothing like these monsters from Canada. They have no fear of humans. Another Govt debacle.

Several years ago while driving through Montana on a road toward Flathead Lake we went through an Indian town where there many FHA type housing units with old junk cars and refrigerators laying around the yards. Stopping for a DQ Blizzard I asked if they were being occupied. The clerk said some were but that all has at one time or another. They took out first floor flooring and made other modifications. When they tired of the housing they moved out. I didn’t see any TeePees though.

The last time I was in Yellowstone Park, I’ll admit it was a few years, the buffalo appeared to have taken over. There was no buffalo shortage at that time.

Actually it was true. They were pregnant cows and calves.

These new imported wolves from Canada are huge.
