Black residents of Chicago are leaving for cities like Atlanta in massive numbersaway from the waves of crime tearing apart their hometown. ___
William Lee describes the crime and poverty driving black residents away from Chicago, where he lives in the South Side neighborhood of South Shore. According to Lee, "a multitude of black residents have called it quits with their hometown, searching for safety and prosperity beyond the city limits my own friends and family among them." Lee adds: "It's been a humbling experience watching as those worlds, those communities filled with stable families and businesses, crumble into the dust." The data also backs up the personal anecdotes shared by Lee: the city lost 181,000 black residents between 2000 and 2010, according to the U.S. Census.
The article weaves more personal anecdotes with the research and data that describes the demographic trends at work in Chicago. The persistent theme that runs throughout the article: crime and its terrible effects on the communities of Chicago.

Heading to Atlanta to escape crime? I sense a face-palm coming on ...
Does Atlanta have great Welfare resources? Lots of Section 8 housing and easy access to EBT grocery stores?
Just wonderin.
Yeh.. I’ve noticed.. to the Madison WI. area.. Refugee sanctuary - come rape us...
They will carry their culture of illegitimacy, drugs, and violence with them wherever they go. They'll just turn wherever they go next into the same he!!hole that they're running away from.
Yes in a way. Many blacks that had enough left for the South East Michigan burbs especially for the schools. Integrated, and not the picture of that Obama paints for us, perhaps even what Dr. King envisioned.
the data cited is so old it is not relevant

This could be a gain for Trump, as he drives a wedge between the Dems black and Hispanic factions.
This isn’t all that new...it started as far back as the 80s (if not earlier) when concerned parents sent their children to live with extended family in the South to get them away from the city’s gangs and other bad influences.
Unfortunately, in many cases, they ended up bringing the gang influences with them...and now the Chicago gangs have taken root in the south as well. I expect the process will repeat itself here.
Incredible. the black population of Chicago declined by over 10% from 2000 to 2010.
Unfortunately for Chicago and Rahm and his boys, the 10% who left are the most productive, best educated, least likely to join the gangs, etc. etc.
The cancer metastasizes.
Atlanta also has very generous weapons laws (not exactly “Constitutional carry” but getting close); think “open carry of a machine pistol with an easy-to-get permit”. Can’t assume would-be victims are impotent.

The people featured in the article are young professional types, who are not going to live in the ghetto of Atlanta.
And, they mention that housing costs are quite a bit lower in Atlanta. So they are probably getting some nice housing for a lot less than if they simply moved to suburban Chicago.
You’re so screwed.
A couple of years ago I read a piece describing how most northern cities would face declining populations; in the larger scheme of things, it makes no sense to deal with heating costs and weather uncertainties (business/school closings, power outages and such). I guess warmer areas, while they may deal with air conditioning costs, deal with less of the other stuff.
NYC and maybe Chicago were expected to be the only ones that remained as large cities; the rest (Buffalo, Pittsburgh, Milwaukee, Philly, Minneapolis, etc.) were expected to face ongoing population declines. I don’t know enough about these places to see how it plays out.
