Capitol is the building. Capital is the city.Capitol is also the area around the Capitol, like "Capitol Hill." Thomas Jefferson did this to us. He named it after the Capitoline Hill in Rome. Snobby and high-falutin' but this sort of thing has been a plague on our country since its founding.
