A group of conservative activists huddled behind closed doors Thursday at a Washington hotel to plot strategy to stop Republican front-runner Donald Trump , including calling for a unity ticket to oppose him and a floor fight at the GOP convention to deny him the nomination.
The meeting was led by conservative talk radio host Erick Erickson, a longtime outspoken critic of Mr. Trump .
“We believe that the issue of Donald Trump is greater than an issue of party. It is an issue of morals and character that all Americans, not just those of us in the conservative movement, must confront,” the group said in a statement posted on Mr. Erickson’s website.
The only member of the group identified was Mr. Erickson. The other attendees were described as “grass-roots conservative activists from across the country.”
The meeting underscored the increasing dismay within the Republican establishment as Mr. Trump moves closer to capturing the nomination, either by winning the requisite 1,237 delegates or at a brokered convention in July in Cleveland.
“We call for a unity ticket that unites the Republican Party . If that unity ticket is unable to get 1,237 delegates prior to the convention, we recognize that it took Abraham Lincoln three ballots at the Republican convention in 1860 to become the party ’s nominee and if it is good enough for Lincoln, that process should be good enough for all the candidates without threats of riots,” the statement said.
“We encourage all former Republican candidates not currently supporting Trump to unite against him and encourage all candidates to hold their delegates on the first ballot,” it continued. “Lastly, we intend to keep our options open as to other avenues to oppose Donald Trump."

It seems to me that if they were legitimate ‘Conservative’ activists, they would realize that Cruz is still on track with a legitimate, although difficult, path to stop Trump. They don’t want a Conservative, they want someone the establishment can control - period, end of discussion. They hate true Conservatism.

I stopped reading right there.
“Conservatives” are NOT plotting Trump’s demise. The plotters are the RINO, GOP establishment, elite GOP aristocrats, GOP consultancy class, the super-wealthy GOP “donor” class, GOP plutocrats and GOP oligarchs. NONE of whom are actually “conservative”; they are merely self-serving scum who disdain their captive peasant voters who they see simply as necessary evils for maintaining their personal power.
Romney’s get-Trump speech has finally laid naked for all to see that the Democrat party aren’t the REAL enemy of the people, instead the REAL enemy is the fake opposition party to the Democrats. The Democrats no longer pretend to be what they are not: they now overtly campaign as the party of national socialism, period. The Democrats have also repeatedly demonstrated that they are willing to sacrifice their individual members to advance their socialist agenda, e.g., Obamacare cost them the House and the Senate. The GOPe is willing to sacrifice nothing.
The GOPe is interested in nothing but keeping their own gravy trains chugging along. And thus with Romney’s get-Trump speech, we all have proof positive of what we’ve known all along: the GOPe is nothing but the minority partner of the Uniparty, but that’s quite good enough thank you very much, just so long as their gravy trains keep pulling into the hog trough station on schedule, loaded with all of those free shrimp cocktails and caviar at the posh gala D.C. soirées, free jet trips around the world, free five star hotel living, free five star restaurant dining, and free skybox seats at the major league sporting events, all paid for by we peasants and lobbyists.

Erickson needs to be punched in the face. Of course these DC elites cannot allow the voters to decide, they know better. Sounds a lot like communism.

Erickson, et al, have been Cruz supporters throughout the campaign. They must have given up on Cruz. Why else resort to these extreme, 3rd party measures?
This effort will die just like their support of Cruz has come to a miserable end. They will be embarrassed and finally Erickson will be removed from the radio here in Atlanta.

Who played for their airfare, hotel, chow? Grass roots activists can just take off from work when the Lizard Overlords call, I guess.
If these “conservatives” would have spent HALF as much time working against Obama as they have spent blocking Trump, Obama would have been impeached and in jail for over 4 years now.
So did Trump, but Carson got over it - I'm sure he will get over Erickson as well.
If they would have fought half as hard to conserve one thing, anything in the last forty years, that might have nice and bought them some credibility.
Regardless of what anyone does, it'll be President Trump in January 2017.

Yes. That happened last summer when Mr Trump inflicted severe butt hurt on Erickson. I don’t think he ever recovered from that episode.
