Us too. Reduced our overhead, work sometimes, and get by. But we do it in the Rockies, down a long dirt road. I like the slow pace.

The plan has been evolving for decades! In order to “fundamentally transform” America (from a Democratic Republic based on concepts of natural law and FREEDOM to Democratic Socialism), Obama and the left must:
1. Manufacture an economic crises
2. Destroy the job market converting self-sufficient, tax-paying citizens into tax-consuming serfs
3. Declare capitalism and free markets are FAILURES
4. Repeat the lie enough to gain buy-in to enable
5. Government / central planning and control of everything and everyone.

I understand what you describe, and it is completely logical, but such reasoning has led to a near-zero birthrate among Americans (just as it had with Western Europeans). Now they are prepared for disaster because they have no children, no house, and increasingly, no car.

The consequences weren’t worth it.

You’re right; that is why age discrimination protection kicks in at 40. I’d imagine with some more physical jobs you’d have no workers over 40 without those laws.

In my experience, it isn’t age itself that exposes those 50+ to layoffs/downsizing - it is the accumulated benefits (additional weeks of vacation, 20+ years of accumulated raises, etc.) that basically price them out of their own jobs. I’ve seen it especially with low-skilled clerical workers who end up in that situation; even worse, their seniority often gives them benefits (such as priority for scheduling vacation time over more skilled/valuable workers) that rankle some people in high places.

I’ve hired/supervised people in this demographic, and I have to honestly say they all seem to work out well with the exception of white American women. While everyone else seems grateful to have a job, and will adapt as necessary to new technology, the white women I’ve dealt with (thankfully not in my own area) still think we work 9-5 with two 15 minute breaks and an hour lunch, with overtime never expected or required.

Invest 20k and start a small computer repair business. I paid my self back in under 2 years and now draw 500/wk in personal salary and I don’t have to work very hard doing it.

I tell everyone I can, that you’ve got to start developing a plan in your 20s to start working for yourself in your 40s.

I was laid off at 53 and again at 59...got jobs in my field both times, by God’s grace. First layoff was extremely difficult...second worked out great and is still going strong three years later...only by God’s mercy.

I spent three years bustin my hump in my mid fifties trying to get hired into a new job after the company I worked for went belly up, this after being employed every day since I was 15. I finally gave in to physical pain and after two major spinal surgeries am disabled, I still have a knee replacement to go. There are some people here that would call me leach on society because I can no longer work and am collecting disability.

Now if they can just find a job.

I'm talking about the ones who have jobs. They should save for retirement. But many don't. I see a lot of wasteful young people. The cafes are full of them. So are restaurants and stores. I know some of these people, and they fritter away their money on useless things, things that I do without even though I can afford it.

I feel bad for the ones who can't find work. However, there are jobs available but lots of young people are lazy. My daughter works nearby at a firm where young people are quitting constantly because they're lazy. The jobs are there; young people gripe that it's work and quit after a month or two. The benefits and pay are good, but the company expects people to produce work. My daughter is saving money and putting it aside every month, for herself and her young child.

Good for your nephew. My sister does this, worked in government jobs all her life and new her pension is not enough to keep her in mortgage payments. But she is good at tutoring, and the pay is OK for the amount of time required.

I agree with what you say.

But everybody needs a time in their life when they aren’t worried about eating cat food when they get old. I didn’t use to worry. But, much like you. I buckled down. I loved livin’ La Vida Loca while it lasted. :) I’m pretty much a saver today...but miss those days.

I work in a internal Help Desk. The higher ups could always outsource us.
I also have a bad manager who was hired less then 4 years ago and so far 16 people have left with 8 fired (7 he hired) . We have only 10 people. A few more citing this manager as the reason they are leaving. Prior to that there was no firings. He may be the cause of the whole Help Desk closing if the higher ups notice all the turn over. They figure they can outsource the job.

At my age I figure who would hire me as I am the old man (in better shape then most of them : ) Most of the people in the office are 25-35 years old. I show up every day which helps me keep my job.

you have stated the solution but did not apply it. the problem is universal and it is the rut.

in my opinion one past say 55 should not bear down on continuing to do what you are or recently have been, but rather allow change that involves perhaps one of the many ninch knowledge areas or skills.

In a post above I advised forming a corporation, a real business venture, and then setting about finding something for that company to do. It would seem you have a ton of possible roads to go down to find one that allows you to offer services people will pay for. You do not need to really know what you are doing, it will become apparent and If you screw up, do it differently.

I retired at 55 and have been at my retirement job to my amazement for 20 years now. Last year I shed clients because I had more to do than I wanted. Just this year, a woman that was at one of my shed clients started her own shop with a list from her old employer that included me. So, I took her on and hope I can stand the business.

I’m a great believer in serendipity. Good things happen out of the blue. You can plan and scheme till you are blue in the face and have nothing happen. Then, out of nowhere something totally unplanned happens and opens up opportunity.
