It is desperation time for the Republican party establishment. Its extremely well financed favorite — Jeb Bush — never got anywhere with the voters in the primaries, and has already been forced out of the contest.
This should at least cause some second thoughts — or perhaps first thoughts — by people who keep repeating that money buys elections. It is one of many theories that seem impervious to evidence.
The desperation of the Republican establishment comes from the fact that the two biggest vote-getters in the Republican primaries — Donald Trump and Ted Cruz — are people they do not want to be the Republican candidate for President of the United States.
The immediate panic is over Donald Trump. His surprising string of victories in the primaries conceals his vulnerability in the general election in November. Most of Trump's primary victories were with less than 50 percent, and even with less than 40 percent. In the general election, less than 50 percent usually means losing.
Even more important, while Trump's style and substance may endear him to his followers, both that style and that substance are deeply offensive to many other people. Polls repeatedly show higher negative responses to him than to any other candidate.
Trump is not just in danger of losing this year's presidential election, which the Republicans would otherwise have a high probability of winning. He can poison the whole Republican brand, taking Republican members of Congress down with him, along with Republican governors and other state and local officials.
Stopping Trump is obviously a high priority for the Republican establishment, as shown by their biggest gun, Mitt Romney, suddenly coming out swinging against Trump in the media.

Cruz or Rubio or Kasich?
Another “expert” in grave fear of being no longer in a position where his opinion makes any difference.
The hatred from the MSM towards Trump has been astonishing.
When I find myself disagreeing with Thomas Sowell, it makes me want to be vary cautious.
Oh yes the daily pearl cluchers posting. How about the people who write this stuff start looking at the turn out numbers.
THEY may find Trump offensive to their PC sensibilities, the voters certainly do not.

The most imortant thing to the RNC/GOP is blocking us from electing a President who would enforce the laws and secure the borders.
They do not intend to allow the citizens to keep the rule of law or our country.

And they keep pointing out that Trump got less than 50% and if he got 35% it means 65% don’t want him. Well, duh! If Cruz got 25% it means 75% didn’t want him.
They really do believe we’re all a bunch of dumbasses who can’t do simple “rithimatic”.
Sowell is mired down in his distaste for Trump to the point he can’t see clearly.
Running against 16 other candidates, and being exposed to the most anti-candidate rhetoric I’ve seen in 45 years, Trump has held up well.
Nobody can tell me Trump’s negatives are higher than the first lady of anti-rape victim ideology and the “what does it matter now” defense.
Trump will have Clinton whimpering in a corner by the time he is done with her.
Oh, bull. They've done that all by themselves.
Mr. Sowell, How are your predictions on Trump doing so far?
One has to wonder that, given how much money they threw at Jeb before this election even started, the GOPe didn’t know that there was a revolt coming.
Referring to Sowell as “the MSM” is every bit as ridiculous as referring to Trump as “conservative”. Both couldn’t be further from truth.
Sowell is not MSM. Ridiculous to categorize him that way.
The Republicans have not earned the White House.
It’s not ‘their turn’.
The had eight years to come up with a plan and a suitable candidate that would be welcome to the voters.
They chose to play games with delegates and flood the field to keep people from getting to the nomination so that they could select their own candidate.
They can go back and learn their lessons, start another party, and retire and let the new generation take hold of the party.
