Just Who Are 'Trump's Evangelicals'?
Christian Science Monitor ^ | MARCH 6, 2016 | Molly Jackson

Just Who Are 'Trump's Evangelicals'? Debates whether conservative Christians should support Donald Trump's presidential bid have revived a more long-term question: Who 'counts' as an evangelical, anyway?' By Molly Jackson, Staff MARCH 6, 2016

Donald Trump has not yet given voters a nuanced view of his understanding of Christian communion: The professed Presbyterian referred to the sacramental bread as "my little cracker" during a meeting with conservative Christian leaders last year; more recently, he tried to put money in an Iowa church's communion plate ahead of the state caucus.

But if the unconventional GOP candidate has a tendency to overlook religious subtleties, he's in good company.

As Mr. Trump has solidified his lead in the GOP, some of the most appalled people left in his wake are evangelical Christian leaders perplexed at how a man like Trump is drawing support from their flocks.

Recommended: What do you know about Donald Trump? An equally confused army of secular pundits has attempted to answer that question, now one of the campaign's most defining conundrums, with a range of possible answers: He's got messianic appeal. The rank-and-file is fed up with the GOP. They feel besieged. He's running a country, not a church. They're "getting too worldly, letting anger and frustration control them," as the head of a Focus on the Family affiliate told the Associated Press.

But as evangelical leaders continue their soul-searching – or endorse Trump outright, as Liberty University President Jerry Falwell Jr. did in January – religion scholars on all sides of the faith spectrum are criticizing the media's use of the word "evangelical" itself, a deceptively simple label that obscures the complexity of American Christianity.

Just Who Are 'Trump's Evangelicals'?

We definitely don’t need Cruz’s deals giving Iran nice and giving away four country through trade.

I was listening to Trump talking about the Iran deal over the weekend. Of course it was the worst deal ever, but what struck me was right after he repeated the BS claim that the U.S. gave Iran $150 billion dollars he proceeded to complain that they weren't spending any of that money in the U.S. but were instead buying Airbus airplanes and Russian weapons. Is Trump not aware that the U.S. still has laws preventing U.S. companies from trading with Iran? Does he plan on getting those repealed? And if he plans on repudiating the deal once in office, as he says, then how can he complain if Iran doesn't buy anything from the U.S.?

GOP strategist: No road to the nomination without Evangelicals

http://thehill.com/video/in-the-news/260038-gop-strategist-no-road-to-the-nomination-without-evangelicals

Just because some one goes to church on Sunday, tithes, does not make them an Evangelical Christian. That takes a 7 day a week commitment.

The rest I call Sunday Christians, the rest of the week they live in the world, not the Word. They drink, cuss, cheat, steal, hold wild parties, etc.

I understand what you are saying. I purposefully have ignored all tv watching this weekend....sick of all of it. I understand the 150 billion is their money to begin with. I understand trump doesn’t know everything about this difficult situation. Honestly I am supporting trump for a variety of reasons but most importantly this. In 200+ years politicians mostly lawyers have gotten us in this mess. Let’s try and see what a novice can do. I truly believe he can’t do worse. This is our last chance anyway. I say it’s drastic and risky but worth it.

Cruz didn’t vote for tpa. So Cruz would make great deals on trade.
Trump tho says everything is negotiable which means he can’t be trusted on trade.

Trump can be trusted more then a lawyer. Lawyers have made a mess of our country. If not for trump, we wouldn’t even be talking immigration, trade or cutting anything.

Businessmen who donate to leftists and echo leftist ideas can’t be trusted.
Cruz was for building a wall when Trump advocated amnesty.

Get over it. I just listened to trumps speech going on right now and it’s good. He’s back to his old self after the nasty attacks last week. Trumps a fighter. You keep bringing up donations. Who cares in the big picture of our country. We are falling apart and you are worried about donations? We do not need another lawyer as president. They suck each and every time.

Trumps no fighter. He said and did nothing about having to donate to politicians he didn’t agree with in order for his business to operate. He’s a coward not a fighter

Yeah sure. Go to weak Cruz. Cruz will be destroyed by Hillary. Cruz has won 2 primaries and a bunch of little attended caucus’ not exactly winning.

Polls show trump losing to hitlery. Trump is weak with his ever shifting or softening positions

...."Polls show trump losing to hitlery. Trump is weak with his ever shifting or softening positions"......

Trump's inconsistencies are his own demise and what you get with someone who has no foundation....but it doesn't seem to faze his supporters.....they still line up to what makes them feel good rather than the reality of how it is.

National polls today mean nothing. They mean they would vote for her today. November is a ton of time in politics. Problem with Cruz is he can’t beat trump outside of home court advantage and caucus’. Even more concerning is no southern states of even counties in some cases. That clearly is not good.

You would post the opposite if polls show trump defeating hitlery.

In november trump may well have evolved and softened on all issues.

Who knows. All I know is we need to bring in more republicans into the party. Fair or not that’s the way it is. The democrats have 204 delegates going into a race with Cruz and we have 181 going in against Hillary. Why do they always say we need to win Florida and Ohio and they only need to win one. That’s life. Trump like Reagan brought a bigger voting block. You do know we haven’t won well since 1988. 2000 and 2004 were barely wins.

Is trump bringing in new people or are leftists doing an operation chaos?
leftists support cutting off people who don’t go along groupthink and trump supporters are doing that to long time Conservative activists who reject/question trump.

I don’t watch polls as they are obviously misleading and unreliable just as we’ve seen...and I never did.... so your comment does not apply to me or others who want to see the results of actual voting.

Trump is dependent on them for without he doesn’t generally have much to talk about as everything else...his greatness, his winning, his wonder, all stem from how he sees himself politically via these polls.....they are central to his campaign.

I read your links. I understand if Cruz’s Dad was running for office why I or you wouldn’t vote for his Dad, but it’s not Cruz’s Dad that’s running....It’s Senator Cruz, who is.

Are we now not voting for people because of what some of their family believes? I will vote for Cruz because I believe him, he’s a very smart Constitutional lawyer, and he has actual action to prove he stands up to the Washington establishment.

Now, whether or not he’s an “evangelical” or even a born again Christian, I don’t know. I believe that he is, but that is between him and Jesus. People who claim to know someone’s heart when they don’t have evidence to back it up (like all of Obama’s Muslim support and Christian oppression), I don’t just buy it.

Like Cruz said, he’s not running to be the Pastor of the United States. He’s running to be President. If he’s elected, that doesn’t make him a sudden dictator who could then declare some kind of mandatory prosperity gospel litmus test for citizenship or something.

Trump, however, has made statements and counter statements which sound a lot like a dictator.

Cruz’ goofy Dominionism is a cult, same as Glenn Beck’s and Mitt Romney’s Mormonism is a cult.

People who stayed home in 2012 because of Romney’s faith are gung-ho for Cruz. Makes no sense.
