I know from personal experience that the BBB tries to aggressively hard sell business, especially small business to become “members”, memberships that are meaningless and their sales people often imply that without a membership, “your business will not get customers or lose customers” or “you might not get a good rating without paying for a membership” and then they try to upsell them for plaques and signs other items and additional listings.
But in some cases when complaints, sometimes numerous and some very serious complaints of fraud are filed by consumers, if a business is a member, it doesn’t impact their rating at all, or in cases where the business isn’t a member, when even one single complaint is filed with the BBB, despite the BBB’s claims that they inform ALL business, members or non-members and are given the opportunity to respond to the dispute, if the business not a member (or even in some cases where they are), they are never informed even over one single complaint and then they suddenly go from an A rating to an F rating without ever knowing why.
I’ve had to field calls from these hard sell BBB call centers at various companies were I’ve worked over the years and I hung up on them just like the toner scammers and boiler room stock brokers or the calls I’d get to “buy” a listing in the vanity and equally completely meaningless “Who’s Who Of Important Business Leaders”.
Years ago I worked as an office manager/bookkeeper at a company were I had to screen business credit applications and one of the questions on the pre-printed app we used was “What is your BBB rating?” Just about everyone came back with an A rating but it was meaningless as to their credit worthiness and I ignored it and eventually whited it out on our credit apps.
He does tend to bring out the jerk in his followers. It’s amazing how usually normal, rational, reasonable people become when they join that club. I’m sure most of them would be against bearing false witness for instance, but when it comes to this cult, they don’t seem to have a problem with it.
