Interestingly, the Pledge of Allegiance has changed over time:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pledge_of_Allegiance

1892 (first version) [1]

“I pledge allegiance to my Flag and the Republic for which it stands, one nation, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all.”

1892 to 1923

“I pledge allegiance to my Flag and to the Republic for which it stands, one nation, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all.”

1923 to 1954 [1]

“I pledge allegiance to the Flag of the United States of America and to the Republic for which it stands, one nation, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all.”

1954 (current version) [2]

“I pledge allegiance to the Flag of the United States of America, and to the Republic for which it stands, one Nation under God, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all

I have to admit, I did not know the flag code. Never knew what to do with my hat. But this was written at a time when everyone wore a hat..............

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pledge_of_Allegiance

The United States Flag Code states:

The Pledge of Allegiance to the Flag: “I pledge allegiance to the Flag of the United States of America, and to the Republic for which it stands, one Nation under God, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all.”, should be rendered by standing at attention facing the flag with the right hand over the heart. When not in uniform men should remove any non-religious headdress with their right hand and hold it at the left shoulder, the hand being over the heart. Persons in uniform should remain silent, face the flag, and render the military salute. Members of the Armed Forces not in uniform and veterans may render the military salute in the manner provided for persons in uniform.[

Captain and Brevet Lieutenant Colonel George T. Balch

http://www.goordnance.army.mil/hof/2000/2001/balch.html

Toward the end of his life, while auditor of the New York City Board of Education, he devoted much effort to promoting patriotism in the children of the nation’s public schools. A motto he drafted in this connection, “We give our heads and hearts to God and our country; one country, one language, one flag!” was adopted by a number of schools in many states. It was Captain Balch who proposed that flagpoles be erected on or in front of all the public schools in the nation, and he became nationally known for his work on this project.

“We give our heads and hearts to God and our country; one country, one language, one flag!”

The original by the Captain Balch, might have been the best......

[We give our heads and hearts to God and our country; one country, one language, one flag!]

I’ve noticed on the web that even “GOD BLESS AMERICA” is being replaced with “God Bless the World”. America, wake up!

Our generation, has little understanding of the history of flags. Our eyes go over the word with little understanding.
Bottom line is flags are for identification and communication.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Flag

During the High Middle Ages flags came to be used primarily as a heraldic device in battle, allowing more easily to identify a knight than only from the heraldic device painted on the shield

During the peak of the age of sail, beginning in the early 17th century, it was customary (and later a legal requirement) for ships to carry flags designating their nationality;[1] these flags eventually evolved into the national flags and maritime flags of today. Flags also became the preferred means of communications at sea, resulting in various systems of flag signals; see, International maritime signal flags.

Use of flags outside of military or naval context begins only with the rise of nationalist sentiment by the end of the 18th century; the earliest national flags date to that period, and during the 19th century it became common for every sovereign state to introduce a national flag

God Bless America has an interesting history also that I didn’t know. Written at the end of WWI for use in a play? But origination does not negate how God uses it.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/God_Bless_America

Irving Berlin wrote the song in 1918 while serving the U.S. Army at Camp Upton in Yaphank, New York, but decided that it did not fit in a revue called Yip Yip Yaphank, so he set it aside.[3] The lyrics at that time included the line “Make her victorious on land and foam, God bless America...”[4] as well as “Stand beside her and guide her to the right with the light from above”.[5]

Kate Smith, 1930s
In 1938, with the rise of Adolf Hitler, Berlin, who was Jewish and a Russian immigrant, felt it was time to revive it as a “peace song,” and it was introduced on an Armistice Day broadcast in 1938, sung by Kate Smith on her radio show.[8] Berlin had made some minor changes; by this time, “to the right” might have been considered a call to the political right, so he substituted “through the night” instead. He also provided an introduction that is now rarely heard but which Smith always used: “While the storm clouds gather far across the sea / Let us swear allegiance to a land that’s free / Let us all be grateful for a land so fair, / As we raise our voices in a solemn prayer.” (In her first broadcast of the song, Kate Smith sang “that we’re far from there” rather than “for a land so fair”.)[5] This was changed when Berlin published the sheet music in March 1939.[5]

Kate Smith was important:

it was introduced on an Armistice Day broadcast in 1938, sung by Kate Smith on her radio show.[8

Later, from December 11, 1969,[8] through the early 1970s, the playing of Smith singing the song before many home games of the National Hockey League’s Philadelphia Flyers brought it renewed popularity as well as a reputation for being a “good luck charm” to the Flyers[8] long before it became a staple of nationwide sporting events.[8] The Flyers even brought Smith in to perform live before Game 6 of the 1974 Stanley Cup Finals on May 19, 1974, and the Flyers won the Cup that day.[8][11]

Kate Smith is also interesting. And now you know the origination of “it ain’t BEGUN till the fat lady sings.”

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kate_Smith

Smith’s plump figure made her an occasional object of derision; however, late in her career, Philadelphia Flyers hockey fans said about her appearance before games, “It ain’t BEGUN ‘til the fat lady sings!” Smith was 5’ 10” tall and weighed 235 pounds at the age of 30.[10] She titled her 1938 autobiography Living in a Great Big Way.
