With Senator Charles E. Grassley under attack for his handling of the Supreme Court nomination process, a formidable Democratic challenger will run against him this November, the most significant sign yet that Democrats see the court and the candidacy of Donald J. Trump as twin liabilities for Republicans.
Patty Judge, a former Iowa lieutenant governor and state agriculture secretary, is expected to announce her challenge this weekend to Mr. Grassley, who is seeking a seventh Senate term and had previously been seen as having little opposition to re-election.

Iowa is one of the few states trending red, Maine being the other. The senator should have no problem getting another term.
What the see as a liability is actually a plus.
Political historians (you know who you are) may recall the 1982 U.S. Senate race. A seemingly formidable challenger was found to run against Lloyd Bentsen, but Bentsen revved up his political machine and scored a landslide not only for himself, but the whole state Democrat ticket. History could repeat.
I’m not particularly worried.
Laughable.
Chuck has statewide support and will be reelected for as many terms as he cares to serve.
Don’t believe this for a second. It’s the Times trying to pressure Grassley into accepting an obamadrone nominee for the Supreme Court.
Grassley looks out of it — confused, slurred speech. He has difficulty reading what his staff writes & puts in front of him. There isn’t a young conservative in Iowa to mount a primary challenge?
She’s a sad joke.
BUSH!T, Charles Grassley will BEAT this B!TCH like a rented mule!
Several Iowa news outlets speculated that an Iowa judge might be proposed, putting the senator in an uncomfortable position.
Don’t know if the chatter is accurate.
This looks like the NY Times trying to disguise wishful thinking as news. Grassley’s seat is pretty safe.
Even if Grassley is defeated, it won’t matter as long as the Republicans remain the majority in the Senate. They’ll just promote the next one to his position.
Well, I guess this explains his feigned outrage over the Obama administrations handling of criminal illegal aliens.

“Iowa is one of the few states trending red, Maine being the other. The senator should have no problem getting another term...”
Assuming that he doesn’t listen to Romney/Rubio/Cruz and INSTALL Scalia’s replacement.
(Cruz will lobby quietly, just to get it off the table in November)
This is not a formidable challenger but a sacrificial lamb. Patty Judge will be 73 by election day in November. She won two statewide races by marginal amounts (the second time with a plurality) for Ag Secretary and only won Lt Governor because she was elected with Chet Culver in 2006. She lost with Culver in 2010.
Grassley is an institution in Iowa and will probably serve until he’s carried out feet-first.
Call me crazy, but I don’t see him bending on the court choice.
For God’s sake Grassley is 82. Retire for goodness sake. Why do these old people want to stay in office. Mandatory retirement at 65 for Senators. Our Senators are so ancient a good many of them. It is ridiculous.
