Virginia Gov. Terry McAuliffe on Friday signed into law a compromise gun policy hammered out between Democrats and Republicans who rarely see eye-to-eye on the hot-button issue.
The measures will allow more out-of-state concealed-handgun permit holders to legally carry guns in Virginia, prohibit people subject to permanent protective orders from carrying firearms and require police presence at gun shows for voluntary background checks.

The measures flew through the GOP-controlled House and Senate with little opposition.
The compromise was vehemently opposed by Former New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg’s gun-control group, Everytown for Gun Safety. The once-strong ally of McAuliffe ran ads in Virginia attacking him for the deal, saying it gives too much to gun-rights advocates.
“I understand that politics is about compromise. But it is baffling that someone like Gov. McAuliffe, who has a reputation as a great deal maker, accepted a deal that so many have described as a giveaway to the gun lobby,” said Andy Parker, whose daughter Alison was killed on live TV while conducting an interview in August. Parker noted in a statement that McAuliffe signed the legislation on the six-month anniversary of his daughter’s death.

I am normally hard-pressed to say anything good about McAuliffe.
But I am forced to, this time.
Well done, Governor.

Must have been a useless bone tossed to the rabid Dems so they can say they got something out of the deal.
“Pardon me, sir. Would you like to undergo a voluntary background check?”
“Of course, officer. I have nothing better to do with my time.”
Isn't it true that a permanent protective order can be obtained against someone "on a balance of probabilities," without having to prove beyond a reasonable doubt that the order is warranted?
In other words, a ball-busting judge in family court could easily issue one for any woman that asks for it, and BOOM, a man loses his right to self-defense based on the "subjectively reasonable fear" of his ex.
No doubt that when you’ve got a thousand guns laws on the books, it’s always better to have a thousand-and-one.
If Bloomie don’t like it, it must be pretty good.

He had a choice. Veto the universal reciprocity bill that was steaming his way and have a pretty good chance of a successful override, or cut a deal and save face.
He cut a deal and saved face.
The VA state police will be required to do a background check at gun shows for private sales. Purely voluntary on the part of buyer and seller. Gun shows are already crawling with cops. It’ll give them something to do.
The legislature had the votes to override his veto so he was between a rock & a hard place and of course, always the political animal, he opted for a supposed “deal” that spared him the humiliation.

McAuliffe had little choice. The state legislature had veto-proof majorities in both chambers ready to pass a “total recognition” law that would have cut the ground out from underneath McAuliffe and Herring, and forced an expansion of reciprocity.

Unknown. It’s on permanent protective orders which in VA last 2 years. Permanent protective orders are only issued after a hearing. My understanding is that it merely restates already existing Federal law.
As with any court order, it is subject to appeal, and expires in two years in any case. And yes, you could run into an a**hole judge. But an a**hole judge can put you in jail on trumped up charges just as easily, so I don’t see that as a unique risk.

My bad. Here in CA and other states I’m familiar with, FFL dealers do instigate the background checks. There is always an FFL dealer at our gun shows. He is there to make money.
Voluntary would give anyone the right to say no? Fine with me. We’re I to buy there, my answer would be phuck no.
Love the outcome, but that does make him a MUCH MORE FORMIDABLE OPPONENT in the future...as he now has pro-gun creds. Don’t be surprised to see him in the Senate, with a lot of pro-gun supporters, and then pulling a Joe Manchin on us.
He doesn’t have the pro-gun creeds. He was backed into a corner and decided to save face rather than have his ass handed to him. Simple as that.
Both senatewhores from VA are ‘rats. Neither are retiring that I’ve heard. Fast Terry’s next job is likely to be as a lobbyist (GOV IN VA LIMITED TO ONE TERM). There was some talk of him being hitlery’s veep. She’ll probably pick someone else. Fast Terry is unlikely to deliver VA. He is a political aberration in truth. He got in because the VA gop-e, in a fit of pique, decided to abandon it’s own nominee for governor. That sort of game is not likely to happen so much now. The gop-e is going to be too busy trying to survive after the trumpnado hits.
The idea that the vehemently anti gun Bloomberg would have a prayer of winning was and is laughable in the age of terrorism, feral youth and illegal immigration. It is the issue most likely to produce electoral losses even among Democrat voters, as many candidates learned to their detriment.
