Being compared to Carson is high praise, although Matthews thinks its a put down.

There is a lot of truth to what Mathews was saying. I have long marveled at Trumps ability to hold an audience armed with nothing but free flowing sentiment, spiced up with jokes or condemnations as per the occasion. Interaction with and acknowledgement of his audience is key.
