'I am so happy': 106-year-old woman dances with joy as she meets Obama

Virginia McLaurin may be 106 years old, but that didn’t stop her from breaking into a jig of excitement as she finally met with U.S. President Barack Obama and his wife Michelle Sunday.

McLaurin was so excited to finally have the chance to travel to the White House that she threw her arms into the air and began to dance as she shook the president's hand.

"I tell you, I am so happy," the diminutive but bubbly centenarian told the Obamas as they posed for photos.

"A black president. A black wife. And I'm here to celebrate black history. That's what I'm here for."

McLaurin's visit was co-ordinated as part of Black History Month celebrations after months and months of campaigning.

McLaurin had written a petition to the president on the WhiteHouse.gov website back in 2014. She said she had never met a president before and didn't think she would ever live to see a "coloured president."

"I am so happy and I would love to meet you and your family if I could," she wrote, adding: "I know you are a busy man."

She suggested that to spare him the trouble of coming to her home, "I could come to your house to make things easier."

That petition led to a community Facebook page that appears to have been set up by neighbours and friends, and a YouTube channel in which McLaurin repeats her request to meet with Obama.

That meeting finally happened on Sunday and judging by the video released by the White House, it seems the Obamas were just as impressed with McLaurin as she was with them.

"Oh my goodness, I want to be like you when I grow up," Michelle Obama told McLaurin as they met.

"You can!" the senior responded with a laugh, before taking both their hands to dance.

I wish her well. That woman has seen a lot. I would never persuade my 97 year old grandmother (dies about ten years ago) that FDR wasn’t a hero. She thought I was taken in by those “tricky Republicans”.

I hope with the next president, Black History Month and Kwanzaa finally go into the dustbin of history.

Well, good on her. Obama is an idiot, and a POSoTUS, but for this lady, who has seen *real* change since she was a little girl, meeting the President, and a “black” president at that, would be a big deal.

When you’re 106, it doesn’t take much to get you excited and start dancing a jig.

Dancing with the Mr. and Mrs. Obama is on my bucket list. Except that I spell bucket with an “f”.

I am happy for the elderly lady and her joy of seeing a “black” president and a black first “Lady”, if she/we only knew the truth about both of them. (Everyone can be fooled in some ways) At least when she passes away, she will have seen more history, unfortunately “bad” history in this case. Too bad both odumbo and the moooooooooooooch are not better examples.

What I will say to Donald Trump when I meet him: “A white president. A white wife. And I’m here to celebrate American history. That’s what I’m here for.”

106 years old and she's learned nothing except to see skin color. What a waste.

Can you imagine if someone said that? The double standard is amazing.

She was 54 years old in 1964. She actually saw “Jim Crow” in action; she has also seen the entire disastrous trajectory of the mis-named “civil rights” movement. Doesn’t look like she learned much from it. Few other people learned much, either, so I can’t really fault her.

What a stupid comment.

I don't know this woman's story, but we can probably assume that it wasn't easy. She most likely grew up with people judging her simply because of the color of her skin. So yeah, she's 106 and goes to the White House and see some of her own kind living in it. Just allow her the moment without intimating she's a racist.

It seems only white people remember that MLK said he hoped for the day when people were judge by quality of character not skin color. That is sad because blacks in general would be helped by concentrating on quality of character. Those blacks who do are wonderful people, but shunned by their own.

I have a friend whose grammar is perfect until she is around other blacks then her demeanor and speech become unrecognizable. It is sad because she is a brilliant, loving person.

The speaker of that sentence lived through actual and systematic discrimination. Her liberties as a free human being, guaranteed by our Constitution, were trampled upon by popular will and agents of the State. When she was growing up, Ben Carson could not have entered most medical schools in the nation, solely because he was black.

It is right and proper to celebrate that a member of an racial/ethnic group that was previously discriminated against was elected to the highest office in the land. Indeed, members of that racial/ethnic group have now been legitimate contenders in both major parties. Objectively this is a good thing for our nation.

That is entirely separate from the fact that the individual elected to that office has been an abysmal failure who advocates destructive policies that exacerbate racial/ethnic tensions, undermine our liberties, weaken our economy, and encourage our enemies abroad. I condemn Barack Obama for what he has done and what he believes, not for what he is genetically.
