The other list you may want to get on is the Live Thread ping list for Trump's rallies, which is run by PJBankard. You can freepmail PJBankard directly to get on that.
I support all those ideas (freedom!). Getting gov’t out of the way would indeed be part of the “fix”. However, you did not fully answer my question:
We already have the advantage over Germany and Japan in all those regards (ie., they have had more gov’t control over their economies, than we do, for a long time.) They are stomping us. Japan’s economy is not so hot, but, we still run a big deficit with them. Germany has done very well — they may crack yet, trying to support Southern Europe, but just think where they’d be if that money was invested in Germany.
Freedom alone cannot overcome bad trade deals.
As for less imports and exports, that is a very interesting question. In terms of raw materials, there are very few we actually need to import, given sensible policies for a decade or so. Again given sensible policies, most manufacturing could return to the U.S., and then our wealth is not being drained. We might not be competitive with manufacturing exports, but we are not now. Our major exports like ag products and coal would likely remain viable.
Are higher prices so bad if the US resumes wealth accumulation at a good clip? Are tariffs so bad if they pay down the debt or lower other taxes? (This would be a very good question for Trump, BTW, however, I think his position is that most other countries will cave due to the threat of US tariffs. China can’t really hurt us all that much with tariffs on goods going to them from the US...)
Thank you.
>>>Are higher prices so bad if the US resumes wealth accumulation at a good clip? Are tariffs so bad if they pay down the debt or lower other taxes?
Trump’s tariffs won’t just raise the prices of raw materials, they’ll almost all prices. Consumer goods will go up significantly (lower standard of living, wages worth less). Companies use a lot of goods that aren’t “raw materials.” These prices will go up, their cost of business goes up, the price they have to charge for their products and services goes up.
Your argument is that it will be ok, because, this will balance out that over the long run...
Who is managing this balancing out? The big hand of the government. Who will decide who gets ‘protected’ for how much and who doesn’t. Politicians. Imagine the bureaucracy and favoritism this enables. In the end you are hurting the many to benefit the few.
Are we to trust this manner of economic management by central government?
China sells us a lot of stuff really cheap. This is a bad thing in some people’s mind.
We get a billion dollars worth of stuff from China, they get half-a-billion dollars worth of stuff from us and a lot of dollars - which they then have to spend to buy goods in services in the U.S.
There are many things we can do to improve our economy, but increased government control

Thank you very much for your thoughtful reply.

Looking at your scenario
Paul,
In my previous post I left some shards and snippets and miscellaneous typos. Please ignore, I’m going to get some coffee now.
:)
It’s “woman”. :-)
I have listened to Trump many times, and sometimes the things he says leaves me scratching my head.
However, I dislike and distrust all politicians. Of all the possible candidates, Trump and Carson are the only 2 still in it who ever held a real job. The rest are what are called public servants, but I prefer to call them leeches.
Thank you for your reply. At my age, I am thoroughly cynical about the political process. I used to think that if Republicans were in charge of everything, then all would be well. Well, that didn’t happen.
My husband has been tooled by a large company where he was employed for many years. Our oldest son says that is the reason millenials are so jaded. They have seen their parents used and abused by corporations and don’t want any part of it. The recent announcement about the CEO of Schlumberger getting basically the same huge bonus he got last year, in spite of laying off thousands of employees, is the kind of crap that has people boiling mad.
Our primary is on Tuesday. My husband is a die-hard Trump fan and our oldest son and daughter-in-law will probably vote for Trump, too.
I don’t really trust him, but I really don’t trust career politicians. I have yet to see one keep one of their phony promises. So, I will vote for Trump, too. At least he has done something in his life other than be a parasite on the rest of us. They like to call themselves public servants, but I call them leeches.
