In a surprise vote last Saturday, the Turkish parliament denied permission for the stationing of US troops on Turkish territory as part of the preparation for a war against Iraq. A draft law allowing 62,000 US troops to use Turkey as a base for invading Iraq failed to gather the necessary absolute majority. Those voting against the motion included members of the opposition social democratic Republican People’s Party (CHP) as well as nearly a third of the deputies of the ruling Party of Justice and Development (AKP).

This is from 2003, but it’s a good reminder of why we should not support Turkey.

If we need a base in Iraq, I’m sure the Kurds would welcome us. LOL, but with Obama and the SOS, only God knows if they would approve it seeing that all the help they wanted from us, was ignored, and the opening was filled by the Russians.

Composite Recon Track requiring two missions Incirlik Air Base (Turkish: İncirlik Hava Üssü) (IATA: UAB, ICAO: LTAG) is an air base, located in the İncirlik quarter of the city of Adana. The base is within an urban area of 1.7 million people, 10 km (6 mi) east of the city core, and 32 km (20 mi) inland from the Mediterranean Sea. The United States Air Force and the Turkish Air Force are the primary users of the air base, although it is also used by the Royal Air Force and by Saudi Arabia.

Incirlik Air Base is the home of the 10th Air Wing (Ana Jet Üs or AJÜ) of the 2nd Air Force Command (Hava Kuvvet Komutanlığı) of the Turkish Air Force (Türk Hava Kuvvetleri). Other wings of this command are located in Merzifon (LTAP), Malatya/Erhaç (LTAT) and Diyarbakır (LTCC).

Incirlik Air Base has a U.S. Air Force complement of about five thousand airmen, with several hundred airmen from the Royal Air Force and Turkish Air Force also present, as of late 2002. The primary unit stationed at Incirlik Air Base is the 39th Air Base Wing (39 ABW) of the U.S. Air Force. Incirlik Air Base has one 3,048 m (10,000 ft)-long runway, located among about 57 Hardened aircraft shelters. The base is one of six NATO sites in Europe which hold tactical nuclear weapons.

=============================

Our government has bases that we don't know about. There was one near Basra (Iraq) that we didn't about and we lived only 280 miles away. You would have thought that we might have seen or heard the air traffic, but they obviously skirted the Eastern Province of the KSA.
We SHOULDN'T support ANYONE over there. The only ones we buy from are the Saudis and we don't need their petroleum and natural gas YET, as we will wait, I believe, that THEY exhaust their sources FIRST. Then we will use ours.
Just as opinion.

1. I tend to think of the Kurds as being opportunistic. We would have to make them an offer they couldn't refuse, so to speak.

2. That "opening filled by the Russians" would be a disaster.

I don’t remember us wanting a base there. I do remember us wanting to use it as a door.

This is true. However, they did allow the Air Force to fly out of there. There were considerable reports of our F-16’s flying out of there to support Iraq War II, and to enforce the “No Fly” zone between the two wars. What was it - 12+ years before we invaded the second time??
