mmediately after Saturday night's Republican debate, CBS News interviewed a nationally representative sample of debate watchers assembled by GfK's Knowledge Panel who identified themselves as Republicans or independents.

Thirty-two percent of these debate watchers say Marco Rubio won the debate, beating out Donald Trump (24 percent) and John Kasich (19 percent), who are ranked second and third, respectively. Further down on the list are Ted Cruz (12 percent), Ben Carson (8 percent), and Jeb Bush (5 percent).

The gloves come off in the CBS News Republican debate Republican debate: Donald Trump promises to cut use of profanity

Marco Rubio is the clear favorite among Republicans, while independents are largely divided between Trump, Kasich, and Rubio.

Donald Trump has been leading national polls for months, and he is seen by Republican and independent debate watchers as the most likely -- with 42 percent -- of the six candidates to win in November should he get the nomination. But Marco Rubio comes in second (22 percent), beating out Ted Cruz (14 percent) by eight points.

GOP... We are the stupid party.

Rubio stabs conservatives in the back with the Gang of 8. The mendacity and duplicity with which Rubio tried to sell it was stunning. His record as a pro-illegal Florida House Speaker and conversion to anti-amnesty/border hawk in time to run for the senate in 2010 speaks volumes. And here we are, a little over 2 years later, giving him serious consideration for the nomination to the presidency. We are the stupid party.

Then there is Trump... I don't even need to delve into him... Again... We are the stupid party.

Frankly, I’m surprised they’re not saying it was Kasich.

From the “moderate” viewpoint, his performance must have appeared rational, measured, and Presidential.

This is ODD because Rubio is usually in third or further down in most polls. Cruz usually second. Trump wins almost every poll. So Rubio jumps both Cruz and Trump? Odd poll?

Nobody. If they’d attack Hillary and Bernie like they attack each other then we could pick a winner.

Maybe you need to let the Americans be in this party and find a party that is more suiting your brilliant intellect.

You need one of those reverberator devices when you say “Presidential.”

This is good! Ted is moving up in the polls. He beat Carson and Bush! I am sure he will make up the difference by next Saturday. He is the only real Conservative and the real Christian in the race.

The only question is...will Trump now finish a close 2nd in SC, or will he finish 3rd behind Rubio?

Those look like online polls—if so then they are garbage. If online polls were accurate we would have President Ron Paul.

I’m not overly thrilled with the choices, but Cruz is the best option at this point.

My requirements are that they have to be anti-GOPe. Cruz and Trump are the only two that meet that criteria.

Trump scares me—it will probably be a lot like a Hillary Presidency. Kiss his ass or be scorned. But at least the GOPe and the DNC will be losers if he wins.

Defeating the republican establishment should not be your number one priority, as this would indicate that beating the Democrats is at best your second priority. That kind of thinking will get you a candidate that can be beaten by Hillary.

Rubio is a duplicitous weasel and I would never vote for him or Yeb!

This poll is out of step with every other poll I’ve seen.

Trump dominated the debate last night and he may well gain an additional 5 points from it. Many of us political junkies live in a bubble and give relatively minor gaffes and mistakes way more weight than the average guy.

Fact is, Trump is the only one who is perceived as "fighting the system" and sticking up for the little guy on the Republican side. He is already so far ahead of the other candidates that only a complete meltdown or disaster would prevent him from winning the nomination at this point.

In fact, I think Trump has already moved away from focusing on the nomination (as he feels he has it in the bag) and is now reaching out to general election voters, which is to say is the Independent, Reagan Democrats and even the Blacks and Hispanics who typically have been taken for granted by the Democrat Party.

Is that strategy wise? We will soon find out. If Trump wins SC as easily as he did in NH, NV and the SEC states should quickly fall in line. Over the next three weeks 23 additional states would have weighed in.

Yes, just three weeks from today, this nomination could well be basically decided. At least on the Republican side.

Seems like we spent the past year in slow motion talking about what may happen with regard to the primary process. Now we are suddenly in fast forward. Buckle your seat belts.
