Because of their opposition to issues like same-sex marriage, abortion and others, many Christian conservative voters in the South and elsewhere feel their faith and the moral code by which they live is under siege and look to the political arena for support.
Inside the Sunshine Coin Laundry near the Piggly Wiggly supermarket, Lagretta Ellington removed her family's clothes from one of the large dryers and began to neatly fold them on a nearby table.
The air was moist and smelled of detergent. The floor was concrete. Her views of the presidential race were anything but. She was unsettled, and distrustful. The candidates just seemed like entertainers.
"I'm going to pray on it," the 48-year-old Ellington said. "Hopefully, God will lead me in the right direction."
In the South, now the pivotal battlefield of the 2016 presidential campaign, faith and politics walk the aisle together. And while Christians have always dominated American politics - Bernie Sanders this week became the first non-Christian ever to win a presidential primary in U.S. history - conservative Christians feel under siege.
Marriage is being redefined, and they're being forced to go along. A new health care law mandates free contraception, even if it violates their core beliefs. Even the greeting "Merry Christmas" feels under assault.

There, fixed it.
Bernie Sanders this week became the first non-Christian ever to win a presidential primary in U.S. historyBernie Sanders won the primary?
With that big whopper I almost quit reading.
Do Christian conservatives of South Carolina vote for gay old Linda Graham and anti confederate flag Nikki Haley??
Christian conservatives in the South are going all in for Donald Trump. He’s Christian enough and he’s conservative enough and he will get the job done.
Adlai Stevenson was a Unitarian and therefore, in many people's minds, not a Christian. So was William Howard Taft (but not his son Robert A. Taft). Both won at least one primary.
The biggest enemies of social conservatives have been liberal Republicans. They want our votes, but not our values. Cruz appears to be one of “us”. Trump may prove to be fine (and I hope so, if he is elected), but I doubt it. I’ve been bitten too many times to work for a very recent and very convenient semi-convert to our side. I simply don’t believe that he will be any different, and I won’t exert any effort to elect him. I am no longer on the plantation.
True! I'm in S.E. TN and have started seeing Trump signs in the neighborhood. One of them near my farm was eaten by a cow though. It made me mad but was sort of funny when I passed by and saw a black cow reach over the fence and grab the sign off it's support and start shaking it. I need to get one for my yard.
Could you provide three examples of things he's done, not said, but done in his life prior to running that lead you to that conclusion?
Off hand, donating $1 millions to the Veterans Memorial in NYC, paying off a mortgage to people who helped him, flying an ill child across country for medical treatment when airlines denied him passage. Helping a widow pay off her farm mortgage to stop repossession.
You don't have to be Christian to do any of those things.
Most of the ones I know support Cruz. But I’m on the fence.
Can you give three examples of things he has done prior to running that evidence the practice of Christianity?
You know, I will admit he has never had hands laid on him, declaring him King of the United States, whose mission is to return riches to the church, he has never claimed to be the most Christian candidate running for president, he has never insinuated that all who don’t support him and donate millions to him are really not Christians or conservatives.
I believe you and I have different definitions of Christian, we’ll just leave it at that.
Lol. Too funny. Name 3 things Cruz has done that was a success. You say that trumps things you don’t need to be Christian. Ok but Cruz doesn’t even tithe which is a basic Christian tenant.
It's not a question of a different definition. There is NO evidence of it that I can see. If there is ANY evidence of it, I would like to see it. I looks like tons of people will vote for him.. But don't say it has anything to do with being either Conservative or Christian.
I don't care. I don't vote on the basis of religion.
Ok. I knew you would ignore the 3 Christian things Cruz did successfully. You are quite transparent.
I'm not ignoring them. I don't care if he's a Christian. There is not reason to defend a belief I don't hold.
What I care about is that people are deluding themselves about Trump. They have convinced themselves that he is something that he is not.
