Not so easy. Done right, which seems Apple has been doing and the owners used properly, the answer is: you can’t. Sort of a fluke, even the NSA requires acres of supercomputers running for years at best, age of the universe at worst.

Iphones use very solid encryption and Apple doesn’t keep the keys

I thought the Feds required to monitor all of our voice and data communications real time to stop these events from happening in the first place. If they can’t stop these terrorists why track law abiding citizens. Or at a minimum get warrants for suspects and track only what you need. They have so much data it’s worthless.

I wonder if the perps were stupid enough to have their phones automatically backed up to the cloud?

Na, the FBI would have already checked this.

You wouldn’t need to unlock their phones if you didn’t let the moslems into the country in the first place.

While Comey was busy chasing white ranchers all over the West, these real Muslim terrorists were going whole hog right under his nose, with industrial grade security clearly gotten from foreign intelligence services.

Real success story that guy. They keep blowing people up, he keeps missing them.

“The FBI is still struggling to unlock San Bernardino killer’s phone.”

Give it to a 12 year old. He will have it cracked in 30 seconds.

The FBI should send that phone to Texas A+M University because they can expedite opening that phone with their very advanced techniques in their IT department.

THEY DONT WANT TO UNLOCK IT

Just like they ‘released’ the crime scene of his apartment so the press could contaminate it into uselessness , so they could not get fingerprints of any associates, (has any one ever seen a crime seen let wide open like that before?) they do not want to find the phone numbers of whoever he was talking to.

“Months after the tragic shooting at a health clinic in San Bernardino, FBI agents are still unable to unlock the phone used by one of the attackers”

Does anyone think that the FBI have been ordered to screw up the investigation in order to cover up the Muslim network involved? The investigation has seemed wrong from the start. First, it was workplace violence. Then it was reporters breaking into an apartment and destroying evidence. Now, the multibillion dollar Homeland Security people can't figure out how to unlock a cell phone.

Something is very wrong here. Someone is deliberately subverting the investigation.

Can’t they bypass the phone to the chip or cache?

Concur with you 100% on your theory, detective.
There are enough actuaries, statisticians, technologists, and encryption specialists to open that iPhone if they wished.
Big Government wants that phone locked-up tight for a reason. I blame 0bama.

There’s nothing on your phone they want. Calm down and think objectively.

Any government can run amok, and everybody has to keep an eye on that. The problem is not the legal capacity to get the information, but what they’re going to do with it. There are many terrorist attacks that have been thwarted because of information, and others that could have been (I think the most recent French attack is among them) if there had been more access to information.

Potentially, this could be used to attack anybody if suddenly the government decides they don’t like them - for example, if Islamists get into power in the US, which in my opinion is not at all unlikely, especially if either Trump or Sanders gets elected.

But at the moment, the FBI is on our side, and I think it’s a little alarming that they can’t get into this. One of the problems is that the FBI is way behind in computer resources, including both hardware and trained people. I gave a class once to an FBI office, years and years ago, and not only did they have outdated equipment but they had a ton of civilian employees who could barely spell the word “computer” and were afraid of it, and a lot of agents who somehow seemed to think it wasn’t going to impact their lives and maybe somebody else would handle it anyway. You know, the Hillary Clinton attitude...
