Seaside community remembers 'loved' fallen officer

SEASIDE, Ore. -- As news of Sgt. Jason Goodding’s death spread Saturday morning, the community of Seaside began sharing memories of the beloved veteran officer. “We know our police officers, we know them by name. When something like this happens, it really has an earthquake effect on us,” said City Councilor Jay Barber.

Sgt. Jason Goodding was shot and killed while on duty in downtown Seaside.

Alan Evans, a Seaside resident, recalled Goodding’s compassion for his community. “He was the epitome of community. We work with the homeless population very closely and he had this amazing relationship with everybody. He wanted to know them on a personal level and he led his life that way,” Evans said.

Goodding was a husband, a father of two and a dedicated officer. He attended Sherwood High School and Portland State University. Goodding was hired by the Seaside Police Department in 2003 and went on to reach many accomplishments in his 13-year career with the department, most recently working as a patrol sergeant. "He really genuinely was one of the most respected and loved guys," said Clatsop County District Attorney Josh Marquis.

Holding back tears at a press conference, Sheriff Tom Bergin echoed the sentiment of the Seaside community.

“Jason was a good man. He was an extraordinarily good police officer," Bergin said. "He was my neighbor, he’s got two beautiful little daughters. He is going to be sorely missed. He is the kind of guy everybody would have wanted to be their neighbor, their friend, and their coworker.”

Moving forward, things won’t be easy, but the community will stick together to get through it.

“It’s just an unthinkable thing to happen here. But what will happen now, is this community will pull together. This family will not be forgotten, they will be supported and loved and cared for,” said Barber.

“It's devastating. It is. Life is precious. It makes you realize that,” Evans said. A vigil organized by the family is scheduled to begin at 6:30 p.m. Sunday at Broadway Field in Seaside.

Very sad and great illustration of why a taser is not always appropriate when a suspect won’t show his hands. Taser’s do not always work and both barbs do not always penetrate clothing resulting in an ineffective hit. Sounds like the taser either missed or did not penetrate and now a community has lost an officer, husband, and father.

Taser’s can be highly effective in some situations, but not a deadly force situation like a man with a knife or gun or a person known to carry guns or possibly be armed who will not comply or show their hands.

Prayers up for the Sergeant’s family. This article has more details about what happened and even after this there is still someone who questions if it was a good shoot or not when his partner shot the man who had already shot a cop (and would presumably shoot the second cop). Sigh.
