While it's not a done deal yet, there's a good chance that we may finally be receiving a final decision from the Supreme Court on the question of so called "assault weapons" bans. Back in December, gun rights activists were largely disappointed when SCOTUS decided they would not hear an appeal to Illinois' assault weapons ban, allowing a lower court ruling in favor of the law to stand. At the time, I speculated that they were waiting for more lower courts to weigh in on similar challenges around the country to see if there was some sort of consensus or if the states were divided and in need of clarification from above.
This week that question may have been answered. The 4th Circuit, hearing a Maryland case, went the other way, overturning a ban on AR-15 style rifles and expanded capacity magazines.

All you people out there had your fair warning back in 1994 with the Republican Approved Assault Weapons ban. That last 10 years and let lapse during Bush’s term. If you didn’t get your butt out there and get some, then shame on you. Shame on you because there is STILL time for most of us.
They can’t take what they can’t find.
First, they may appeal the 4th circuit ruling to an en banc panel of the 4th Circuit.
If that does not happen, the district court has to rule on the ban.
When that happens, the district court ruling will likley be appealed to the 4th Circuit.
Then there would be an appeal to the Supreme Court.
Very likely a two year process.
The technology available to the common person is quite amazing. The micro manufacturing revolution has started. Is your garage ready. Is slave labor China ready (no they aren't).

What the bloody hell is an "expanded capacity" magazine?
STANAG magazines (standard equipment for AR15 and similar rifles) hold 30 rounds. That's a standard capacity magazine.
Standard capacity magazines for AK47 and similar rifles hold 40 rounds.
Standard capacity magazines for 9mm pistols generally hold 15 +/- 2 rounds.

SCOTUS is likely to uphold the ban. Scalia planted the seeds, in the Heller decision.
Whenever SCOTUS might hear this, it will come down to magazine issues. Honest people should not ban guns based on scary looks alone, which in this case would be the same as a semi-auto ban.

Gotta love the anti’s statment “...does the court want to be in the business of handing out AR-15s like so much Halloween candy?” I wasn’t aware that the courts dispensed ARs. Who knew? LOL!
But they can make the penalties so great that these items become very, very rare. This would completely defeat the anti-tyranny motivations behind the 2A. And, they make simple possession of any of the items they ban a felony, meaning a lifetime firearms ban for having any of these.
Coming soon is a ban own having the software to manufacture a gun. When the government has overwhelming firepower against your much lesser weapon, the cards are stacked against you.
My God! Somebody gets it. Micro manufacturing is within a few years of renedering the entire question moot.

It’s a crap shoot at best.
The interesting part will be whether they adopt 2 words in this decision: strict scrutiny. If that becomes the standard, gun control for the most part will be toast.
Ultimately though I think all of this is academic within a few years. With micro manufacturing becoming within reach of the middle and working class, essentially anyone will be able to build their weaponry of choice. Add to that the increasing rates of ownership and its a pretty fair bet that gun control is going to be on the wane. Its like trying to have prohibition when everyone has a home brewery and grows their own barley and hops.

Thermold makes one for the Canadian market. 30 rounds in the standard position, when extended it holds 45. Rock River Arms handles them for dealer distribution, or used to.
For REAL imagination, guess what the big *secret feature* was of the Thermold stripper clips/chargers that Thermold made for the Canadian military.

Oh no, this is CANADIANS [er, les Canadiens!] we're talking about here.
The chemical composition of the vinyl was *tweaked* with charcoal-based carbon content and nitrates so that the little plastic stripper clips were also usable as wet-weather fire starters.
I don't know if this applies to the ones made in North Carolina and sold in the USA, but a few decades back when I took an Alaskan USAF winter survival course, this was demonstrated with a couple of the *plastic sticks*.
Also unknown: if the charger guides or magazines themselves were ever made of the same composition. But y'know, the magazine floorplates could indeed be a mechanism for igniting sparks...if they were made of carbon steel instead of aluminum.
