Thanks Dead. Another person mentioned part of that.
I appreciate the response.
I should have at least gotten Apollo 13 in there.
“An era when American technology was at its peak.”
Yes, when we knew we were an exceptional nation.
All of these men, the Mercury, Apollo and Shuttle astronauts, should have a monument dedicated to their bravery.
Sorry, and women
RIP.
And RIP to another Edgar, former IN Governor Edgar Whitcomb. I seem to remember us talking about him before. Was he the oldest living former Gov?
Why not include the brave Astronauts of the Gemini program also on that monument?
As a young man I saw an absolutely stunning presentation in his home town in New Mexico he put on during a homecoming celebration. The slide show with NASA slides from Haselblad(sp?) cameras were unbelievable in their color and resolution.
I was a line boy at the airport when he was flown in on an Aero Commander and got a opportunity to visit with him and he posed for a couple of pics with my girl friend. Really nice guy, not the ego trip most people think of.
On his moon mission he tried to communicate with earth thru ESP which didn’t work out too well guessing cards. He had a somewhat nutty civilian life with odd religions, etc.
They did a couple trips where they just orbited - no landings. I wonder if any of the guys on those first trips made a second trip for the landing?
“Missed it by THAT much!”
Dang - I should try to remember to read the entire thread before posting a question! Thanks for the answers in advance!
(Hey - maybe YOU have ESP!)
I believe someone mentioned that at least some of them did get to go back.
Yes, that missed it would haunt you wouldn’t it.
Yes, Gov. Whitcomb was the oldest living former Governor (he would’ve turned 100 at the end of next year). Not a record many hold long, likely to remain with Maine’s Joshua Hall, who served as acting Governor for a month in 1830. He held the record of oldest for 12 years, from 1850-1862.
Whitcomb was the one who had me contact some old guy and fellow POW here in Nashville and explain some convoluted story to him about their time in a Japanese internment camp when he had to go under an assumed name there. The guy I phoned was just as puzzled as I was and had no idea how to reply. I never understood why he didn’t just contact the man himself. I was supposed to get a signed photo for the task, but I never did get it from him. *shrug*
Oh, I checked Wikipedia. That oddball RINO from KY ex-Senator Marlow Cook just died as well. He was the one who endorsed Kerry in 2004, blasting Dubya. Zero’s Bitch Mitch and the Marxist Congressman from Lou-uh-ville, Yarmuth, were Cook’s boys.
I guess that means you missed House Rock from Apollo 16. A real highlight! I mean watch the whole thing.
And see, just to amplify on the theme here, what about that stupid MARTIAN movie? People are eager to see that piece of nonsense, but never mind the actually exploration of the moon ... right at your fingertips!
There's no hope!
Well, may God rest his soul. That's the way I'm thinking these days. No, nothing wrong with me! I'm right on course! Just a forty-niner, if you get my drift.
s/b “actual exploration” . Sorry. Don’t know how these things happen :-(
Giant steps are what you take.
You're a shojo manga artist ?
I was born in 1949.
Oh. Well that would make more sense.
I met him once when I was 12.
He signed his book for me.
