Maybe because the only reason Trump did anything for veterans was to try to get the attention off the debate and back on himself? It was easy for Santorum and Huckabee to go - the kiddie debate was already over. Most of the real candidates were making their case to the voters of Iowa at the time.
Doubt his motives, whatever. But for me, this seems to be a case of "God moves in mysterious ways". This money is going to small groups that do a lot of good for a lot of people. How do we know that it didn't save a few lives? Or maybe get some others to look around them and find small groups or maybe a veteran who could use some help?
If he had done this earlier in the season, fine. Even if he had done it earlier the same day or the following day. But for him to so it when he did and how he did showed that the entire purpose of the event was to get the media attention off the debate and onto him. Now if the veterans actually get the money that was raised, I'm happy for them. But don't try to pretend for a minute that this was done for any reason other than to benefit Trump.
