It is entirely Carson's fault. Even if it is your plan to take a few days off after Iowa, there is no way you let that news get out before the start of the Caucus. This information leaked out of the Carson campaign, and all Cruz and his people did was make a reasonable inference.
There is no special Zone of No Consequences around Ben Carson. If he make such a stupid mistake, others are going to make sure he pays for it. Cruz would not be doing his job if he let such a report go without taking advantage.
